It's pretty interesting that Yamaha would choose to warm the intake water with the oil and then pump that into the block... I guess there's enough volume passing through they figure that's enough (although I get pretty warm pisser water when surfing, not hot to the touch, but warmer than ambient.

Maybe the cooling water passes through the oil cooler first since there isn’t that much heat to extract and there’s less oil in the 1.9.

Ya very interesting. But I will say, the port engine pisser was pretty cold when we were on the water in no wake mode, under a load like surfing I have no clue what it would feel like with these new engines. When we go Wednesday after we get done cruising the lake I’ll try to remember to feel the water again to see if it’s any warmer.

Slightly warming to water temp through the more durable cooling fins of the oil cooler may help close this temp difference. Remember that in an auto, the coolant returning from the radiator is only slightly (20-25 degrees) cooler than the engine.

That’s a good point, thermal shock, but consider this.

The engine is warmed up and is getting a constant flow of unlimited lake water. The thermostat is regulating the water temp based on outflow of water from the block, that water bathes the thermostat and it opens and closes based on that water. In my experience these little engines warm up fast, water passages on the engine, exhaust manifold, exhaust gas mixer (which gets a direct feed from the T fitting) everything is warmed up.
So a few minutes of idling then slowly ramp up the rpm’s over a few minutes before hammering the throttles to WFO is a good plan. I’ll even feel the pilot water outlet water to check to see if it’s warmed up a bit.

I think the water goes to the oil cooler first to keep the oil as cool as possible and deliver it back the parts where it’s really needed and keeps the heat out of the bearing surfaces, and I’m not sure if there are any spray jets on the bottom of the pistons but would make sense, and the oil which is being used as a coolant would be more effective that way at as close to lake temp as possible, and obviously it’s pulling heat out of the engine where there is no cooling water. And on the 1.9L there isn’t a whole lot of engine oil… as @anmut said the pilot water outlet water gets warm when you’re working the engine hard so the oil cooler is doing its job to keep the lubricating oil cool, a great design really. One needs to remember these engines’s cooling systems don’t require any air for cooling them with an unlimited supply of lake water, and water over water is highly efficient compared to air over water, and there is no anti freeze to slow the heat transfer.

One thing is a bit obvious, our boats lack a sea strainer. Hmmm.. may have to look into that, I think RIVA makes a set up for that, I’m sure it could be done DIY once a body knew what cooling system operating psi is. I bet a larger version of the strainer I use for my raw water wash down would work but with a screen that wasn’t so fine.

Our pisser water will damn near scald you when surfing. LOL! I've come by a surfer to pick them up and it get on them and they're like HOLY SHIT, WTF, that's HOT!

If we get into the right flow we can go nearly all day. I will preface that with it only being possible when I'm visiting my buddy at his lake house. That lake is massive. Our local lake I generally go a few minutes and will have to drop. Or my family gets bored of watching me and I call it a day so they can do something else. LOL!

Surf guilt - I get the same thing... I'm back there behind the boat having fun and everyone is giving me that "is he going to fall yet" look.

Was a good day! Windy AF, sustained 20mph S winds with gusts higher. Which is why we didn’t put the bimini on. Used the decibel meter to measure around 4k-7k RPMs, which ranged 78-88 dB, not really sure how accurate it was due to the wind so we will retry. We could actually listen to music the entire time and still talk to each other, so quite the leap from the AR230. Top speed with the wind was 50mph, against wind was 47mph. That’s just the wife and I and 80% fuel and no bimini.

Some other observations: The phone holder/charger sucks it’s right in the sun, but still nice to have. Enjoying our first sunburn of the year! This boat feels so massive, definitely love all the space! I think we were cruising around 30mph at 5200RPMs. The 1.9s sound great, especially when you give the throttle some juice. I can tell the boat wanders way more without any CJS or thrust vectors. I’m getting used to it just fine, but honestly why make the job harder? I’ll probably buy one or the other sooner than later. Fit and finish on the boat is an A so far, really no issues yet, washed and waxed prior to going out too. Barely any water out of the drain plug, so that’s nice.

Break-in is complete without a hitch (2nd attempt lol). We can’t wait until it warms up! Water was 61 degrees. Also put on the stoltz bow roller.

That is so awesome. Having big wind is a good test day to find out if all that length pays off (my wife would probably say yes....but I wouldn't know). Stability in the chop better?

I felt it tracked very well into the wind, I believe the articulating keel helped(?), because with the AR230 I felt I was always turning the wheel in chop and wind, even with CJS. We didn't have the bimini up so maybe that helped not having a parachute in the wind too. it was pretty choppy with white caps at times, but didn't notice much of a rough ride even running 47mph into the wind and 50mph with it!

I would also suspect your new boat is a fair amount heavier that your AR230.. it certainly looks it. I don’t know the deets of your 230 but I think the 252 has a 20* dead rise, if that is more than the 230 that will help it ride nicer in the chop.

I bet you’re sleeping a lot better after that successful second voyage…. Nothing like a new toy!

Long day of working on the boat, Easter lunch with family, then working on the boat, and yard work.

Installed the NOCO 10X2 today and performed the DVSR mod. My volt meter quit working but my friend had a volt tester that alarms if there’s any sort of current and thankfully it worked to find which wire had power and the other did not. Hooked mine to the switch instead of ignition wire (no pics since there’s several on the forum). Drilled the first hole in the boat as well to add the NOCO plug, had no desire to drill it through the exterior though!



Installed the trailer guides, best ones I could find on Amazon since some of the better ones were out of stock so we will see how they do. If it weren’t for my local parts store I would’ve been screwed, the U bolts that came with the kit weren’t long enough, but found some that worked. Going to order sleeves for the PVC as well!


Here’s a pic of the stoltz bow roller I installed last week!


Next up is that anchor locker drain and adding some marine mat on both sides of the anchor locker!

Finally was able to have some nice weather to get into the boat again.

Replaced the anchor locker drain, which is almost a two person job. I then used flex seal liquid to fill the bottom of the locker.




Got our JBP marine mat for both sides of the locker and installed that too!


Eventually I’ll get the riser for the clean-out access and the marine mat for the hatch. Other than that I wanna say I’m done with additions! Unless someone can convince me otherwise Now we await for warmer weather!

It really looks great, where did you get that cover for the drain that’s on the outside? The chrome plated one.
