2018 AR210 - 1st time out issues

I’ve had my 2018 AR210 since 2021, no issues. This year, first time in water, white smoke from right side after couple minutes. Put on my lift for few days due to time restraints that first day.

This weekend ran hose water through both engines on lift without noticeable issues. Put in water, and left engine alert immediately on, with limited power. Turned off and back on and both engines initially ran well for a minute or so. Then white smoke appeared again on right side (but not in engine compartment).

Turned engines off again and on restart left engine alert again back on. Decided to put back on lift as a precaution. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As a side note, I had a different person winterize the boat for me this year. Maybe just a coincidence, but I’ve had zero issues with boat (other than replacing a battery) since 2021.

Do you know what caused the alert? Do you have the YDS diagnostic cable?

I would run a compression test on the right engine before anything else.

Welcome BankBlue. Glad to hear you’ve had a number of issue free seasons!

My initial thought was the smoke was the result of burning off the oil from the winterizing, however I see you mentioned the issue presented itself after a few minutes. Have you checked the dipstick to see what the oil looks like to rule water/oil mixing? If the oil looks good, then I would look at pulling the spark plugs and put in a new set to see if it’s maybe a fouled plug?

Also, to further elaborate, when you put it in the water, did you run the engines any higher than idle? As you mentioned there was no issue on the hose. The answer to this question might help others who are more mechanically inclined than I to further suggest what the issue could be.

White smoke makes me think steam more than anything… What is the engine alert for? Overheat? Running on the hose is okay but not in the water makes me assume overheat? Pull your clean out plug on the affected side and see if there is anything stuck in the impeller. Also if it is an overheat then pulling the intake screen on the side of the pump is a good idea too.

I’m interested what all the new person does for a winterization? Agree with VitaminSea above that you should definitely check oil level and spark plug condition.

Agree with your accessment of white smoke...though it is water vapor, some may call it wet steam, steam is invisible. I too wonder if they used antifreeze in the motors and if so, what type, propylene glycol or alcohol based. It should clear up when engines come up to temperature and thermostats open.

Did you see water coming out of both pilot fittings when the engines were running? No overheat on the hose, but overheat in the water sounds like a blocked cooling water intake or jet pump blocked altogether on the port side. "Limited power" sounds like a blocked pump. Checking the jet pump for blockages is easy through the clean out port, but you might have a harder time inspecting the cooling water intake if the boat is on a lift over the water.

In addition to the others posts…

In the second incident you mentioned not from the engine compartment, did it come from the engine compartment the first time?

You said you had a different person / entity do the winterizing this year… what exactly did this person do? Oil change, plugs change, fog the engines? Did you check the engine oil levels?

When you put it in the water, did you just start it or did you take it out for a spin?
