Has anyone seen the Robert Redford movie "All is Lost"? I watched it last night and I can recommend it as a blueprint of how NOT to prepare and handle an emergency at sea.

I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone who might see it in the future but I can't imagine such a slow-moving response to an emergency, the apparent lack of basic preparations, and the overall ineptness of the handling of the situation.

Well, I suppose it is just a movie for entertainment but it could be used as a training film for how to do everything wrong before, during, and after an unexpected crisis hits you at sea.

Watched it on one of my flights this last week. It was rather strange. I actually thought he was rather well prepared, but agree, he did seem rather lethargic and lackadaisical is his responses. His attention to the critical details was strangely pathetic....

A coworker of mine was sailing solo from Miami to Turks and was blown overboard at one point. He was clipped in, but dragged behind the boat for 4 hours while he slowly wound his safety line loop by loop around his arm so he could get close enough to the boat to kick the rudder to one side to get the boat to stop. He thought he was going to die during this whole process.

I thought Redford should have had either a satellite phone and/or an EPIRB being so far off shore--of course that wouldn't have made the movie very interesting to be rescued in a couple of hours.

Can't imagine what your friend went through--reminds me a little bit of the movie "Open Water" where the two scuba divers were dropped off and forgotten about in shark infested waters. I can't imagine being in a situation like that.

Yeah....an EPIRB would have made the movie rather dull. I wasn't sure if I missed something, but it wasn't even clear to me why/how he hit the container, I was wondering if that part was missed on the version I saw. He just woke up and water was coming in....

@Julian I don't think you missed anything, from what I saw he just woke up after the container hit his boat while he was sleeping.
