Hey guys,

Had the boat now for a few years. Last year I upgraded ( so I thought ) to the yamaha mooring cover. Really happy on how it fits and looks until last night after getting home from the lake and pulling the cover off to discover that at the rear on the hull next to the swim platform where the cover rounds the edges to wrap and just cover the bottom it's looKS at though it's worn off the gel coat.. the inside of the cover was completely white in this area and there is absolutely no shine left where the cover was apparently rubbing...
Now I'm pretty certain the cover was tight enough so it wasn't flapping.. possibly dust under it?
Has anyone else ran into this issue?
The inside of these covers are course and don't have a plush finish unlike the original one did from factory.
Any ideas on how to stop this? How to fix the boat now?
Thanks for any advice

Not the first time I've heard of it happening on here as there are other posts about it buried in old threads somewhere and it's why I don't want to pay for the "deluxe" cover if it's going to destroy my gel coat.

Post pics of the gel coat and cover so we can get an idea of the damage.

Frustrating for sure. Spend all that money to "protect" the boat and cause more damage doing so...

Would this show up in photos? Never had this issue, but perhaps you are trailering more than me? But I have a summer of long hauls ahead of me....

It definitely shows on the cover being that it's a black cover with a big white spot on it now.
As for the edge of the boat.. I would have to take a picture tonight and see if it shows.. but it likely will..
Will post pics when I get some

This is definitely an issue that has come up before, at least with newer boats' deluxe covers.
@Majorsmackdown had a post on that which I can not find, or maybe we just talked about it, maybe he can chime in. I think he ended up using some type of tape below the bow to protect it.

Some people save those ugly factory covers to use for long hauls, for that reason.
I would think that, assuming your gelcoat damage is superficial, it should buff out with some orbital action and cutting paste.

Thanks for the replies..
I am hoping it'll just buff out. I wasn't sure if there was a clear over the gel or not.
It's ironic that you mention that ugly factory cover. I was about to toss it in he trash last night but am definitely reconsidering..
The closest I am to any of the lakes I boat in is a min 1hr drive so the boat is always being trailerd somewhere.

No clear coat as what you see is the thick colored gel coat. This is good though because a lot of tough scuff or abrasion that won't buff out on the gel coat could be sanded and polished again as long as no gouges to fill with new gel coat.

Here are the pics of the damage
It doesn't look too bad so I'm hoping it'll just buff out.

I've always been paranoid about this happening. I try to keep the inside of the cover as clean as possible to help avoid this. I haven't noticed this happening on mine (yet) but I am going to have to make a closer inspection now. I cringe when I have to tow through the rain because all of that road shit gets up under the sides of the cover.

I'm not Going to lie. I was pretty pissed when I saw it like that after spending all kinds of money on a nice cover..
But I'm over it now. Happy to know it'll polish out.
Plus gives me a hell of a good reason to get the boat all polished up :thumbsup:

Good attitude. Worse things have happened. As long as the boat still moves under power and you have a beautiful half naked woman/women willing to get on the boat with you to keep you company, all is right with the world.

At least it wasn't your ratcheting straps coming loose on the cover like this poor member had the misfortune of happening. These pics still make me sick to my stomach!

Wow those are some impact marks like something was hitting the gel coat. Was the wratchet strap loose and hitting the deck? The back marks on the deck and seat are odd. A cover like the morning cover doesn't have the die in it to leave marks like that. Or I wouldn't think it would. The rub marks forsure need to make sure it's super tight.

Yes his ratchet strap came loose and beat the snot out of his poor boat. It's linked in the post if you want to check out his old thread.

As for the mooring cover itself, I know a lot of people tow with it but to me it's meant for mooring at the dock or slip more than its meant for towing. The fact it doesn't have a soft inner material like the shipping cover is just asking for it to chaff the gelcoat while going down the highway. That being said its a really nice looking cover and makes all the Yamaha boats look sharp going down the road.
