Bimini NO, how about a CATALINA crossing?

It’s supposed to be a great trip done every year by the San Diego Yamaha dealer and they leave out of Dana point. . Covid kind of messed things up that past 2 years but I’m going to try to go next year with them

I’d consider making a run to Catalina. I went to long beach state for my undergrad and recall seeing highlights from the annual waterski race. Guys doing 70 to 100 mph for 26 miles. I was there on a cruise ship excursion years ago. They limit the number of cars on the island which is why you are more likely to get around on a rented golf cart.

If I went it would probably be on a pwc (much less stressful for me to tow400 miles each way), mine or a rental. here is a company which offers pwc tours from Long Beach to Catalina daily. $400 per pwc plus $60 to add a passenger. Includes the pwc, fuel, wetsuit and a guide.

Wow….$400 is an incredible deal for that all-day trip!

I’ve never been on a pwc all day like that….it seems like if the seas got rough that would be a miserable ride there and back?

Bucket-list for sure!

We ran into the Jetski to Catalina guys when we were out at Long Beach. They were just getting back into the harbor. Everyone in the group looked like they were still having fun. I stopped and talked to them for a minute.

I'd be up for trying the Jetski on a good day. I also want to see about an overnight trip in the Yamaha at some point.

Anyone made the trip and gone around the island to Little Harbor on the ocean side?

I've got a spot on a Beneteau 46 to sail from Long Beach to Catalina 3rd week of Aug with some friends. I'm on the fence on whether I'm gonna pull the trigger or not.

I just saw this today. Had I known about it before it happened I would have been part of it. Next year for sure.

I would definitely be interested. The dealer that I bought my boat from sets up a trip out to Catalina in August. Unfortunately life happens and we weren't able to make it. They make reservations and camp in Two harbors for a couple nights. Maybe next year?!
Did you purchase from M2O and in La Mesa?

Reviving this thread and hope to find a group to make the trip to Catalina sometime this year.

I just booked the two harbors tour with jetski2catalina.com for my son and I.

Up to 30 2024 seadoo gtis.
7a check in, 1.5 hours out, 3 hours of free time on the island, 1.5 hours back. $459 per ski on weekends, $60 more to add a passenger, plus $40 for insurance and $60 as a visitors fee or vise versa. Total for two single riders is just over $1,100.

We could tow our 2021 Waverunners down there but like the safety in numbers aspect of this trip.

I considered following that group to Catalina.

Why not just go by yourself? People make that crossing in 17’ open boats… if I lived there I would definitely be going over there. My friend Anthony goes over there al the time in a 23’ boat and stays the weekend.

It would be my first time, so I like the thought of safety in numbers 😬

Jetski2Catalina(.com): Been There / Done That, check.
There are only two tours available. One the goes to the city of Avalon and the other that goes to the town of Two Harbors. Avalon has more to offer tourists or those with little time in the Island (like more restaurants and shops, golf cart and e-bike rentals). The Two Harbors tour includes and swim through a cave.

Overall, I would not do this trip again on rentals or my own PWCs of my own volition. Why, mostly because it’s just too rough of a a ride. Smooth water is a relative term in the Ocean, especially on a “Jetski”. I think I’m in decent shape and know my Son is but we are also competitive so worked to keep up with our guide who was averaging 40 mph over the 60 miles on the water. We saw some dolphins, the swim to, through and back from the cave was an unexpected workout after the first 30 miles on the water. I was sore all over at lunch, both my son and I were on the 7 hour drive home afterwards. I woke up hurting today. We did not get any big air on the Seadoos but we got a lot of small air on them and the hard landings to go with them.

The Seadoos were better than I expected, but were for the most part fully unloaded (no cruise control was killing me), the fact that I could not control the trim, the position of the handle bars or that its difficult to reboard from the water did not help but the water was rough on the way to the island and almost as rough on the way back. Having my own machine would have helped a little but not enough for me to go through the expense and time it would take to get it to Southern California.

Still, I’d do it again if my Son asked me to but only for the time with him and not without some extensive discussion. This is not a trip for someone that just wants a lazy day on the water.

How was the water conditions going and coming back?

How was the water conditions going and coming back?
On the way out at 730ish AM: large and small swells seeming to come from more than one direction at the same time. Impossible to read, very difficult to maneuver, mostly squeeze the throttle and hang on the tight. On the way back at qbiut 1230 the swells were smoother on the surface because it was less windy but still we got beat up on the way back as well. The drop in, even from she short and/or low jumps can be jarring on the shoulders, elbows , wrists, knees and ankles, very much all joints. It is worse when the ski gets sideways on the way down. We took a lot of hits to the chest from the handle bars and we came out of it with sore lower backs and necks as well. Today I feel like I played tackle football without pads for three hours. I knew it may be a rough ride but wasn’t expecting it to be that rough.
