Hey guys new to the forum here.
I went to my local yamaha boat dealer last Friday to look at a 242 limited SE. Sweet looking boat. While looking at the connext system I asked the owner, who was showing me the boat, if he knew whether yamaha was going to add a gps sometime to the connext. He said the connext already has a Garmin unit in it, but that Yamaha and Garmin are arguing about licensing fees, and that is the reason, as of right now, that the connext doesn't have gps. He said once they come to an agreement on fees, that it will only take a quick computer flash to activate the gps in the connext.
Has anyone else been told this? Thanks.

Welcome Aboard!

@Julian, have you seen any indication of inclusion of GPS in the Connext system?

Personally I would buy a chart plotter and install it rather than waiting on an unlikely upgrade to Connext.

Since I'm under NDA I'm not privy to discuss what is or is not coming in the 2017 models....this will have to wait until 8/28 at 8pmET.

Connext in YJBs already uses a GPS antenna for the speedometer.
I wonder if that GPS antenna enables NMEA-0183 connections, like between a DSC enabled VHF radio and a chartplotter.

EDIT: the Connext "home" screen does show GPS coordinates of the boat.

I am anxious to see if @Julian has anything to share when he is able. I would certainly be willing to pay a fee to upgrade. What I can say about things currently is that the antenna unit transmits a CSV line of data that includes lat, long, elevation, and speed in knots along with a few other bits of data at a baud rate that the computer then reads. Reading and displaying that raw data is easy and no licensing fees need to be paid. Using that data to overlay on a map is where the licensing fees, software, and needed hardware come into play.

That explains the situation quite well. Thank you.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I am very interested to see what we find out from Julian at the end of the month.

Are you planning on installing a chart plotter that would use the boats gps?
Seems that about all aftermarket units come with a built in antenna anyway and the connext would just be a nuisance to deal with. Almost like a factory car gps, I generally just ignore those in my cars, pretty useless.

I am hoping that Yamaha will offer an upgrade so it will be built in to the connext screen. If I installed my own chart plotter I would certainly use what it comes with. The reason I know how gps antennas and chips work has to do with my electronics hobby and working on an home built autonomous gps flight path arduino quad copter with my kids right now. Having fun trying to figure out the flight algorithims programming right now. We may try a gps and object detection toy car as well.
