I’m looking for a way to keep all my stuff in the truck and secure when traveling instead of having to hump it all to the hotel room each night.

My friend has the burliest of these covers on his Silverado and loves it, says he feels totally safe with its security.

Mike suggested this one for me:

Anyone have experience with one of these?

General thought on tonneaus - I bought a tri-fold hard cover when I got my Ram in 2019, absolutely hated it. It wasn't this brand, but it was such a PITA to set it up to have access to the full bed. I went to a soft for the ease of rolling it i up. Just a thought for you.

Regarding security - hard top cover will be slightly better than a soft, but neither as good as the cab of the truck. That said, most vehicles aren't that secure at all. If you really need to keep tools outside in bad areas, might be better off with a secure tool box?

Thanks!

I definitely do not want a soft roll up or even the small aluminum sectional roll up ones, too flimsy. I would add a rather loud car horn actuated with a micro switch with a latching relay, so simply closing the lid won’t turn it off… I’ll have to give my friend Mikes a through going over. I’d like to be able to latch it from inside then close the tail gate. The tail gate has a push button electric latch release so that is pretty secure.

I’ve watched a few of this companies install vids and it looks like its pretty easy to install and take off… I have a fifth wheel toy hauler so when I travel with that everything is in the garage of the toy hauler.

I’m also thinking of changing up where I stay and try the KOA Kamping Karin’s… that would put my vehicle right outside, like the old school motels.. its sad to have to worry about this.. but in todays world, god damn tweakers will steal an empty ice chest.. I also try and stay away from big cities and look for the off the beaten path places to stay.

I was also looking at a simple cab profile shell I could put a sheet of plywood at bed height to use as a bed when camping out… two of my friends who’ve had them say theyre okay if you leave them on… but taking them on and off you’ll mess them up.. maybe I can find a used one to try that out.

my kid has the diamondback hd cover on his truck. he likes it, it's a bit 'clunky' for me, but it's solid. he straps stuff to it like osb sheets and they ride. don't think he's needed to remove it yet.

i went with a roll n lock retractable alum cover (m-series) on my truck to work with my fifth wheel. real happy with it. stays on all the time, it just rolls up out of the way for camper. the canister takes up a bit of room. no one has tried to break into yet.

you're just keeping honest-ish ppl (or prying eyes) out...i think if someone wanted in my kid's bed, a prybar could pull the db off, but it would really tear up the bed. mine is prob gonna come off easier, but i'd guess less damage.

i miss the topper shell (leer 100xq) on my last truck. if you have room to store it and extra hands to remove, they're great.

Thanks for the assessment!

I need to build a bit of a crane or lifting apparatus for my fork lift attachment on my tractor anyway.. the hard top I have will need to be lifted on and off with it, unless I want to break the whole thing down. So with that 4 dedicated lifting eyes and a spreader bar and I could do it myself.

I like the shell idea for being able to crash in there when I’m traveling and put all the stuff under the bed.

I agree that it keeps honest people honest and things out of sight out of mind, and it makes it a pita for those not so honest, hopefully enough that they pass it by.

My buddy has had a Diamondback on his RAM and currently has one on his Gladiator. I have never seen such a tough cover. And with locking tailgates, I cannot imagine something more secure, including the cab as there is no glass to break.

They literally will strap large coolers on top and have even used it as a raised spectator spot with lawn chairs, it's that strong. You are paying a pretty penny for them as well though.

I have used Access, roll up tonneau covers on my last 5 trucks. Of course I try not to leave anything in there that I don't want stolen, as it's just keeping honest people honest. They would have to cut the cover in hopes of finding something valuable.

Thank you for the response!

I’m getting closer to getting one of these for the times that I travel.

They way I use my truck, I need to be able to roll that cover up and out of the way. So the Diamond back was not an option. And those that want to swap between open bed, or a topper will not want it either. There is no easy way to take it on and off without help or a lift. It's rugged.

Right on… I was thinking about the lighter weight version… that one can “only” support 400#.

Its either going to be this type of cover or a shell.. and with a shell, I can put a sheet of plywood in there at bed level for a bed, and have storage underneath it. I have a tractor that I can make a boom for to make taking either option on or off pretty easily.. with either option, things are protected from the weather, out of sight, and pretty secure. This last trip I was on, 1200 miles one way, I got a severe tooth ache when I was away, so having to transfer all that stuff made it more of a pita ..in addition to a two day drive home. A regular truck mounted camper would be nice for the remote locations.. but that is a big investment for something that will not get used very often.

I appreciate all of the input!

We have the Diamondback 270 on some of our trucks at work. I’m getting a new truck soon and mine will have one too. They are stout and very secure, we keep our tools and other…items…secured back there. Never an issue.

Tip, scroll to the bottom of their homepage and click the “shop” link and check the discount section. They have quite a selection of scratch and dent covers for several hundred $$$ off retail. Very minor blemishes and still include the lifetime warranty.

Glad to hear that you’ve been happy with these tonneau covers performance and their security features.

Thats a great suggestion ! I have no problem with buying blem stuff…

Thank you for the reply!

And I forgot to add… when you look at the scratch and dent stuff, they include numerous photos of the actual product for sale and show the issues and describe them as well. So you’re not having to worry about buying something you truly don’t know the condition of.

Awesome thanks!

I have a tigar(spelling) I got from Amazon in 2018. It’s a soft roll up. Still works great and has never leaked. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about it.
