The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) do a annual camping trip that encourages father son relationships with games and other camping activities, We are not religious but I have taken my son for the past 4 years to the local Ward's camp site and we have always had a great time. This year I decided to do my own father son camping trip along with my buddy and his boy we are going to camp out at Lake Powell for the weekend and do some male bonding, skiing and fishing.

Does anyone else have a similar tradition?

Every Fall Break The Boy and I get lost on Roosevelt Lake for 4 or 5 days. No gurlz, no electronics except for a laptop we watch movies on at night (Meaningful movies that I pre-select, like Rudy, Miracle, Meaning of Happyness, etc) We talk a lot after the movies and then watch the stars and satellites play with the sky. I can be pretty rough on him, but that's just because I want him to see how much he has inside of him that he doesn't know exists..... I don't get much time alone with him anymore with football and friends and all the other stuff going on in his life.... I only hope he gets as much out of these trips as I do....

My dad took me camping my entire childhood. Some of my best memories as a kid were camping and fishing with my POPZ!!!!

Awesome, I'm getting excited

My daughter and I have been involved with Y-Princesses here in Raleigh. I'd never heard of it till we moved here. Its like Girl Scouts but rather than a scout leader running things, all the dads participate and run the "tribe". You do a variety of things (including camping) - but most importantly you spend 1-1 time with your child doing things together you might not normally do.

Each spring there is an outing to a huge camp on the coast. There is tennis, shooting, bows and arrows, canoeing, (a bunch of other things) and zip lining. I HATE heights, but Caitlin and I both climbed the tower and faced our fears together.....and zipped off into the wild blue yonder....Memories made for sure!

Doing it on Powell would be awesome! Have a great time! (we look forward to the photos)

Have fun. Sounds like a great time.

My kids and I are involved with the Indian Guides and Indian Princess groups and we camp quite a bit. My kids look forward to vamping and it definitely builds strong bonds with the kids.

Every winter I go camping with my son. Have a new one now but he's still too young. Only done a couple years because he's 4 now but we have a blast!
I am usually off work in the winter anyways so it's a nice time to get away. When I am done having younglings I may take the boat down south.

My friend Mark and I started a new tradition, We arrived on Friday the 30th with our boys and immediately launched the boat and started looking for a camping spot, The beach areas in the canyons were mostly taken so we opted for a different type of camping spot, one that turned out better than we expected. Setting up camp was a breeze because of our "30 Sec" pop up tents and shade canopy but even that wasn't fast enough for the boys who wanted to go fishing, so we loaded up the gear and found a shade spot in Moki Canyon where we proceeded to catch 5 decent sized strippers. We went back to the campsite and filleted the fish and started cooking them for dinner while the boys went exploring in the back canyons. Dinner completed the boys stated that they wanted to go fishing again so we set them up with Anchovies and chummed the area right in front of our campsite but there wasn't much action that night so we started a fire and made smores and looked at the stars. The next morning the boys we up bright and early and wanted to fish right away, we had chummed the stream feeding the lake in front of our camping area so we had a nice Anchovy chum slick and boy did it pay off! "Fish On" the boys caught fish after fish after fish they were biting at all depths and pretty much any part of the Anchovy. The boys caught 15 to 20 fish that morning mostly strippers with a few catfish and Mark caught one Walleye when we had to tell them to stop! Mark and I were trying to fillet the fish but we couldn't keep up with all the "Fish on" and by then the sun was out and he and I were getting exhausted/dehydrated. We offered to take them swimming or tubing/skiing but all they wanted to do was FISH! so we forced them to swim for 15 mins to cool down and then it was back to the grind...."Fish On" they caught another 15 fish that afternoon/evening and by the time we made our evening fire Mark and I were hoping every fish got off their line.

While laying in bed that night my son said "Wake me up at 5:00 am so I can get a early start on fishing" I asked "haven't you burned out on all the fishing?" "Nope, wake me up" so the next morning while I made breakfast Mark baited hooks and unhooked fish after fish after fish. We broke down camp and loaded the boat to leave at 8:30 am by which time the boys had caught another 8 fish which brought our total to 54 fish for the weekend, both boys crashed on the way home and Mark and I couldn't help but wonder if they would remember this trip when they get older, we sure will.

I've done both Guides and Princesses with two of mine, oldest daughter was in girl scouts and we did the dad camp out with them. My two middle kids loved the Y program and can tell you stories of every camp out from K-3rd grade. They also have a special friendship with the kids that were in the group.
