Just a few pics from the weekend since I know we all like looking at boat pics! I also downloaded navionics on my iPad 4. I liked it, but when I went to download it onto my old iPad 1 that I use for the boat you needed the latest operating system for it. So I downloaded iNavX for the iPad 1. So far I'm not impressed with it but I only used it once so far. Kind of wish I didn't drop the $50 on it.

I also got this in the mail:

I paid $30 shipped from eBay for it. I'm really impressed with it! I was expecting something plastic and cheap but the mount is actually metal.

That's a nice big screen to look at. I was on the shore this weekend doing yard work....

You were at the wrong place! Haha. And yeah, it's great during the day but I found it highly distracting at night even with it's dimmest setting.

I think the iPad is hard to read during the day, especially in direct sunlight. It took a few sessions for me to learn how to use the navionics software, last year I had a few complaints but so far this year it looks like they made some improvements to the routing function and the track feature is invaluable in the Sacramento Delta River system that I boat in a lot. For the cost I can't complain, I paid $60 with the upgrades but the dedicated plotters I was looking at were over $500 and they weren't anywhere nearly as versatile as a cellular enabled iPad.

Does it work if you are out of cellular range? At least one lake I boat on I have ZERO coverage on.....as in NONE (Lake Gaston NC).

So what do you get for free with the Navionics Boating app? The site says "Free" and includes "Marine and Lakes government charts." I'm looking for something that I can have on my phone to help me navigate rivers if I'm out after dark... kind of a GPS 'helper.'

You get the NOAA raster charts. I really like it. You select the area you want to download and it downloads it on a seamless screen you can scroll through. The iNavX you have to download each raster chart and they aren't seamless. In other words, when you navigate off the chart you're viewing you have to manually bring up the next chart which I don't like.

Would those raster charts be enough for what I'm looking for? (Keeping it between the shores/etc if clouds roll in at night)
