FSH 222 or 255?

Hey all. I am looking at the FSH 222 or the 255. Wondering about your thoughts between the 1.8 liter and 1.9. I had the 1.8 in my AR195 and to be honest, loved it. The fact that it self-drained and was just easy to winterize was awesome. Are the 1.9 liter's in the 222 similar? reliability between the 2?

I plan to put a trolling motor up front and use a wakebooster on the back for surfing once in a while. I suspect 60% fishing, 40% cruising/boating. I will be on a river for cruising. Lake for fun.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you can afford the bigger boat, and have ample towing capacity, buy the bigger boat. You'll never regret it.

We mostly boat on the Banana River which seems to be frequently choppy. When the water is not choppy our 210 is a great boat. We feel our 210 does not handle choppy water well and are wondering if the 25' boats do better in choppy water.
We live in East Central FL. Can one of you take us for a test ride in a 252 or 255 FSH? We will meet you wherever is convent for you.

This is probably the most disappointing test I’ve seen BT do. I wrote them a rather scathing review not that it will get any notice, so disappointing. I’ve only seen two reviews on any of the Yamaha jet boats that mention the cruise assist in a meaningful way, boating magazines test of the 210 FSH and Canadian based Power Boat test of the 210 FSH, the latter actually demonstrated the cruise assist, then mentions “why more boats don’t have this feature is beyond me”.

So looking at your other thread, you mentioned a high tow point. There isn’t one available on the 222 / 255, I don’t know how well the tower will hold up if you tow people with it, so if you want to stay with the fsh you may have to stay with the transom tow point.

The other thing you will have to decide is whether or not you want a super charged engine or not. The 255 comes with the SVHO / super charged 1.8 engine. The 252 FSH and the 222 FSH come with the 1.9 normally aspirated engines. The SVHO engines require 91 octane fuel, the 1.9’s require 87 octane, the SVHO engines use considerably more fuel at high throttle positions.

Since you are on the river and are going to be on “the big lake” Sakakawea I assume and maybe Oahe? Or both? I’d get the 25’ boat, those lakes can get pretty darn rough when the wind comes up. I’m not on those lakes very often but I’d still get the 25’ boat. Just having the extra room is nice and the extra weight will help with the ride quality.

I found a hold over 222 that is priced fairly well and so I was leaning that way but don't know much about the 1.9 liter engines. That is my question. The 1.8 liter in my AR195 was awesome. I think it indicates that the 1.9 liters put out 200 hp.

That is correct as long as it is not a California model. On the engine the label should read 149 or so KW,

200hp x 746W = 149,200 watts.
/ 1000 = 149.2KW

So far not one negative thing that I’ve seen about the 1.9’s, only good things.

I can’t believe I can’t find any real world reviews and information on the performance of the new 1.9 L Boat and Wave Runner engines. Are these engines a real upgrade or just a marketing ploy?

Well except this guy..that literally popped when I was writing this post. First “problem” I’ve seen with a 1.9.

So last September my Port engine started to make a loud pitch noise and the rpm’s ranged about 2,500 rpm’s off from the Starboard engine while at 5,000 rpm’s. Within 5 min the engine cut so we took it in for service. Took 6 months to get parts for the engine from Yamaha for the dealer to fix. This year I went through the break in process again and after only putting 4 more hours on the engine that problem happened again. These engines only have 46 hours on them. These are also the 1.9L engines. Does anyone else’s have engine problems with their Yamahas this often?
