Hey guys, first boat in March and thankful for finally finding this website. Have already spent some time reading through a couple of threads and FAQ. Got a 2017 Scarab 195; the dealer was supposed to do an "on the water" demo to introduce me to the boat, and the buttons and stuff... but of course with the Covid19 going on that was no longer an option. I may call back later, but in the meantime I am trying to teach myself. Hoping someone here can help me with a more technical question. This weekend I noticed when I pushed the throttle, the RPMs went way up. The engine also got loud and sounded to our un-boat-educated ears like it was struggling... like a car with a standard transmission that needed to be shifted into a higher gear. I told the passengers with me that based on my reasearch, that may not be unusual for jet boats, but they insisted it didn't seam right and that I should take it back to the dealer for repairs.

As FYI, Before taking possession of the boat, I had them to do an engine pressure check and change the plugs, and put 91 octane gas in the boat, which was almost empty.

Sorry for the long first post and if this type of question should be elsewhere. Thanks all,

oh here is the boat

Nice looking boat! On my 2020 yamaha the engines crank way up in the RMPS and are quite loud when running full out.

There is no transmission so the RPMs just keep climbing with more throttle. As long as your impellers are good your fine.

Welcome Aboard!

What engine do you have?

Do you recall what your RPM gauge was displaying and approximate speed you were traveling?

Did you notice vibration or any other unusual sounds or just the loud engine noise?

How did your engine sound at lower RPM?

Our boats our loud at high RPM.

If at all possible, take a video, this allows to better diagnose your problem. You can show the video to the dealer and share here on the forum for others to help better understand the issues.

There is a vast amount of information on this site. Here is some information you can read about
"engine noise loud"

Keep us posted and best of luck.

:Welcome: to the forum! Thank you for signing up. Sorry to hear you're having problems. As noted above, the more info you provide the better we can help.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Congrats on the new to you boat!

Is this your first boat? From your description, there is no obvious problem that requires dealer attention. Most likely, just need to get used to the noise and feel. As mentionned above, a video would be helpful.

How long does it take to get on plane when you give it full throttle? What is your top speed?

Congrats and Welcome!!!

The only thing that what you are describing could be is cavitation. If there was something in the drive (weeds, a twig, a pine cone, etc etc) it can cause water flow issues into the impeller and causes it to cavitate. The more you use your boat, the more you will get the feel for if it is running "properly" or not.

I rescued a boat in the ocean in 2017 and it was cavitating, and the owner didn't realize that this wasn't right. It causes poor performance and terrible fuel economy. He ran out of fuel half way to bimini after burning 50 gallons in 30 miles!

So knowing how your boat SHOULD sound is very important!

Thanks all, and I'll keep in mind about the video. Weather is not looking cooperative in my neck of the woods, so may not get out on the water for a couple weeks. The RPM was 7-8x, going about 30 mph. Couldn't get it much faster, but waves were pretty bounce where we were. It gets on plane pretty quick... or seems to based on my YouTube training haha.. top speed we got it to was about 35 mph... I think max is 40-50 but water wasn't the best.

Based on the replies, think my first impression was correct (this is normal jet boat stuff). But I will check the intake area and keep an eye on it.

Thanks guys, looking forward to contributing one day!

Welcome and congrats on the new boat. Glad that you found us.
