We are hosting a church group dinner next weekend for 10 adults and 8 kids. Last time we hosted I did a fish fry and deep fried appetizers. I over did it on the appetizers and we had a lot of fish left over.

This time I'm thinking cheaper, easier, and more along the lines of finger foods. I ran across a reference to "BBQ Tapas" and thought that would be perfect to showcase the big green egg! So I'm here for ideas on what to make...

My initial thoughts are:

1. Bacon wrapped Jalapeños (along the line of ABTs)
2. Sausage Fatty (with bacon weave)
3. Kabobs (Chicken, Steak, Shrimp)

Guests bring the sides, so we're only on the hook for main course and drinks.

Thanks,

Mike

I love me some fatty...does the bacon wrap on that worth the trouble?

What is Fatty?

A fatty is a jimmy dean breakfast sausage roll. I prefer the maple flavor. I am sure there are different ways to do it...but I just take the whole thing out of its package and put rib rub on it and smoke it.

It's a great, easy and cheap app. Cane wants to do a bacon weave over his...which would be delicious, but also seems like it would be a pain in the ass IMHO.

Another app that I recently did that came out ok, but now that I did it, should be amazing next time.

I take think bacon (the butcher cut bacon, not the crap they sell prepackaged) and place on cookie cooling racks. I then sprinkle this on both sides and let it absorb into the bacon:

After that has been absorbed into the bacon, I sprinkle brown sugar all over both sides as well.

Smoke that up until the bacon is crispy...it's the best sweet/spicy combo ever. I screwed mine up buy burning the bacon, but it was still good.

Suggest BBQ brisket or BBQ pulled pork nachos stacked on individually portioned small plates.
Make however you like to make nachos, but sub a dollop or two of shredded BBQ meat instead of taco meat.

What is Fatty?

It's a perfect combination of BBQ heaven and instantly clogged arteries resulting in cardiac arrest!

@billyb, I think your bacon recipie would be perfect for the weave on the fatty, instead of BBQ sauce!

Another treat is planking pineapple and smoking it until warm with a sprinkle of cinnamon. It can double as a dessert. for 18, I would do 2-3 pineapples.

I'll probably pull out my usual large party fare and smoke a pork butt. Hard to find a cheaper meal that will feed a large group well, and be so tasty!

One of my hits is stuffed japs. I take large japs, slice off the top to create a cap, ream out the seeds and veins, stuff the jap with garden vegetable cream cheese, then I insert a thin slice of carrot. Pin the cap back on with a tooth pick then wrap with a piece of bacon. Bake in oven until bacon is crispy.

I have taken Mooink Balls to several functions as a finger food. Take a bag of frozen Italian meatballs, wrap in bacon, add your favorite rub, then cook indirect about 45 min at 350 until done. I generally brush BBQ sauce on them towards the end.

I don't allow bbq sauce at my house...

I am going to have to try that...thanks.
