I was going to put my newly refurbished impellers back into the boat but decided to check the cones first.

The port side looks different from the starboard side.

I think at a minimum I should put new grease/oil in them.

Should I rebuild either of these?

@jcyamaharider Has just posted about that. You will get great advice here. My 0.02 would be that if the shaft moves freely with no noise or grit, I would clean it really well and replace with a slurry of marine grease and gear lube, which is the jet ski racers way that seems to work the best. You may need new seals/gaskets.

Got em out...I would rebuild them. It looks like there is some water intrusion.

Yeah I would clean them both out and put in new grease. Spin the shaft on a bench and feel for any flat spots. Mine were smooth so I just repacked and going to water test today. My new impellers will be here Thursday So I am pulling my pumps again regardless.

If you want to play it safe, @islandracing sells slurry that is considered a benchmark (on GH anyway, LOL). And yes, some guys use strait gear oil.

To me, the bigger issue is how you prevent future water intrusion. I have recently switched to a diffferent cone that comes with its own seal (the L13), I really like the design, but I know I will be pulling this thing off at least once every season to check on things. My OEM cone/grease looked kind of like your port side.

I don't see that slurry on the @islandracing website. Do you have a link?

ISLAND RACING
MARINE LIQUID PUMP GREASE
IR-MLPG $14.95
8oz

We are often asked what the BEST grease to use in Yamaha pumps is. The answer is our MARINE LIQUID PUMP GREASE.Our grease is composed of MARINE rated lubricants and is blended specifically for use in Yamaha jet pumps. Regular grease is too thick and once "flung" off the bearings will lead to failure in short time. Our Marine Liquid Pump Gease will actually flow to the bearings offering unequaled PERFORMANCE and PROTECTION. Recommended for ALL Yamaha jet pumps from stock to fully modified.

I talked to Dave at impros and he had mixed reviews on using gear oil in the cone. Saying actual grease pulls water where gear oil mixes with water.

@jcyamaharider
Did impros recommend a specific grease. I removed all my old grease using an air gun and plastic bag. Then refilled the cones and hand packed the bearings, best I could, with yamaha dark blue grease. Tried to match what the yamaha manual said to use. I usually check them annually.

If anybody does rebuild and replace the bearing. The, manual does not show the front seals orientation very well for the 24' boats. I did post with pictures a few years ago.

I've never considered touching my impellers. I guess I need to read my manual more closely, but how often or after how many hours should I consider changing the grease?

He did but I forget what he said exactly. Some STP Marine or something else.

water intrusion on the stb side.
never ever ever ever ever ever use straight grease in the pump bearings .Im not even a fan of the grease Yamaha uses from the factory... we use the "LIQUID GREASE" for a reason! ... we also use it in all mfg's jet pumps except the older seadoo pumps that require gear lube

@islandracing

How much grease do you use?
Please describe filling and cleaning?

I want to use your @islandracing "liquid grease" and attempted to place an order as per directions on your website but haven't received any acknowledgement.

The grease looks like a mixtire of gear oil and marine grease. Why not use regular marine grease? Whats the reason? Inquiring minds want to know. Are the rpms just too much? With yearly checks I don't see the issue. The factory grease served my boat well for 8 years and it served my other boat well for 14 years.

Is there a gasket that needs to be replaced when you pull off the cone?

@Julian - there is an OEM O-ring, black rubber. I'm reusing mine in a different cone (aftermarket L13) per instructions from Greenhulk.
You can kind of see it here at the bottom of the OEM cone, sorry not the best pic.

image.jpeg Did I miss the reason to not ever ever ever ever ever use just grease in the cones?

I just pulled mine this morning, pretty sure they have never been opened up on my '09 boat, they looked pretty good the grease was white-ish but I saw no problems.

I cleaned them real good and packed with Yamaha marine grease, I'll check them at the end of the season and see what they look like.
