Driving home from dinner tonight (thankfully our daughter was with a friend) and we came across one of our local teens standing in the road next to the lifeless body of a small dog that we thought might be our dog! My mind was racing as to how the heck our dog could have gotten out, but as we got closer I realized this dog was just a little smaller (same colors, same blue collar)....scared the crap out of us both. We stopped and the teen was understandably freaking, and another man was there....

Turns out the teen was trying to catch the stray dog, and the other man drove by, slowed down, passed them, then the dog ran after him and ran under the car.

The teen's father is a vet, so he took off to get his dad and in the meantime the dog passed away. I ended up checking the collar, got the owners number and called them. That was not a pleasant conversation as the woman began with a very upbeat "Did you find _______?" And I had to break the news to her. She sent her husband over, and he understandably broke down.....

So watch your pets....you don't want to be on either end of this sort of loss.....

My little dog, Chihuahua/Beagle mix looks like a Jack Russel, listens great as long as she is in the house or in the fenced yard but as soon as she gets out the front door it's like she's freakin' deaf and forgets who I am. I have to run after her and chase her back to the house which she will run back inside, I can't catch her to pick her up when she is out.

I'm afraid and willing to bet I'll lose her the same way this dog was lost. She is over 9 years old and the first pet that I have ever really been attached to.

We had this happen to us a few years back. Our little dog started to develop a bad habit of running away from us when she was outside. Although most of the time we could holler at her and she would come back. One morning however, my wife let her out and she bolted. We looked for hours but could not find her. The next morning we got a call from someone that works for our town telling us that she had been hit by a car. My wife was devistated and it took her a long time to get over it, partially because she felt responsible ( which obviously she wasn't ). I feel for that family, losing a pet is never easy.
