Last weekend made a long trip on my boat stopped on the sandbar hung for a couple hours went to start up and one of my engines was hard to crank had to keep spinning it over and over and over till it fired and it would keep running as I was moving along strong smell of fuel stopped halfway for a lil break same issue cranking with a strong smell of fuel went to load boat while it was idling in water could smell fuel and see a haze on top of the water behind swim deck any ideas

First, check the oil and make sure that it's not contaminated with fuel. If so, you'll want to change out the oil several times to make sure that you get it all out. Contaminated oil could cause lack of lubrication and really bad engine damage.

I can think of two causes for this:

1. Bad spark plugs. Our vintage boats really need to have the plugs changed annually to eliminate issues on the lake. Changine the plugs is usually the remedy for 90% of engine related issues on the mr1 engines.

2. A stuck fuel injector. This has been reported a few times, but usually on the 2006 and older four strokes. Two things cause this. A bad ECU or a bad injector. This can be diagnosed with Yamahas Diagnostic Software (YDS), a cable and a laptop.

Check the oil,
Replace the spark plugs
See if it cures the issue

If not,
Start looking towards the ECU/injector

Good luck keep us posted.

Is there any fuel in engine compartment? Did you see any leak around motor? How did it run once started? How old are the plugs?

It ran fine around 8k rpms it dropped suddenly to 6k rpms on time and then jumped immediately to 8 again but that's about it ran ok to me

If your looking in the engine compartment there's a branch of rubber hoses that run in a manifold style and break into four individual hoses going into the side of engine what's running thru them

I think you are describing the cooling water that flows from the exhaust manifold.
What @itsdgm said is what I also would recommend. Don't run the boat until you get those plugs changed. It is not difficult to do. Check the FAQ for details how.

Yeah I seen it leaking they look a lil dry rotted I'm gonna change plugs run it on the hose then check the oil

Just dont forget....engine on/hose on/hose off/ engine off (IE never hose while the engine is OFF)
