Need to make a recruit visit with one of my girls in the next month or so. Clearly an expensive area, based on the hotel costs. But this school is an option. My question is, is the campus located in a nice area of town? As comparison, when we went to University of South Carolina, it was a beautiful campus in a beautiful small town. Just curious as to thoughts on the area around Coral Gables. Safe? Friendly? Thanks.

We need SoFlaDavid in the house to answer this one. Anyone have his contact?

I had a friend down in Miami that I visited often. We would always go to the bars in the Coral Gables. It was a nice area and there were college students everywhere. I think for a college town, its as safe as any. However, Miami is like Baltimore in that a small venture outside of the "safe" zones can land you in less than desirable area.

One cool thing about the area are the free Monorails that run you around town.

And on a side note... Miami, specifically South Beach, have been going downhill in the last couple years. The crime rates have apparently risen.
Miami beach has twice the average crime rate of the state:

But you can see that Coral Gables is much safer than the beach:

I'm here! LOL

Coral Gables is a very nice area. It is one of the nicest cities in the Miami / South Florida area. Only issue I have with it is that the reason it's nice is because they have a million ridiculous rules. Think of a really strict homeowners association. Until recently, you were not even allowed to park a pickup truck in driveway after 7pm. No antennas, and don't EVEN THINK about parking an RV anything like that in your yard.

Here is the "Coral Gables" Rulebook

Hey David, Welcome aboard!

Stay away from being "Off Campus" in Coral Gables. South Beach,(Between 1st and 10th and Ocean and Washington) are fine, Fort lauderdale is really nice. My friend coaches football for the Gamecocks. He is the QB coach. Let me know if you need any other info about SC

I will, Geiger. My nephew just signed with Clemson. He hates when I tell him Spurrier owns Dabo. My daughter may become an "Ass Kickin' Chicken." I guess the cousins won't speak to each other anymore! Thanks for all the tips.

Nice.. My heart is with my College Football Alma Mater... Widener University...That's where the Gamecocks QB Coach was my Frosh and Soph. years. G.A. Mangus is his name...actually played for the Gators.
