Looking to see what everyone is using for boat insurance and the quality of customer service. I can get a decent rate through progressive but didn’t know what their reputation is.

For those that reply, do you use your "regular" insurance company or a boat specific company? Is the policy something other than a fixed replacement value policy? Does is include towing, BoatUS membership, etc.?

I use my regular insurance company, Amica Mutual. The price seems good to me and they have excellent customer service. One problem I've seen and has impacted my general shopping around of insurance is that a lot of companies with good rates have reputations for being difficult when it comes to paying out. Wired magazine did a story about this sometime ago.

SkiSafe has a lot of good reviews/recommendations on a number of boat forums. I had them for a couple of years - good rates, good coverage, but never had to use it. Feedback from others was positive, though.

As a claims manager for an insurance company I can tell you that I have Progressive. They actually do the right thing.
Did insurance rates go way up because people are telling me they're only paying around $600/yr and Progressive quoted me over $1300. NBOA quoted me $580/year with better coverage. Very confused.

Lots of factors play into the cost, especially location, but NBOA sounds like the ballpark I have seen. Even that sounds a little bit high but not by much.

Very difficult to compare one persons quote against another. Unless you both own the same boat, are the same age, with the same accident history, same other policies etc.

I have State Farm....happy with them but never filed a claim. They do cover bimini though....which is a major factor for me.

I second that. State Farm is who I have for home and auto and they quoted me under $600 yr for an AR240. $600/yr is cheap considering what you get if you need it. Money well spent

@spankybeanz .....have heard that State Farm and Progressive have the best customer service ratings. For coverage we have 2 million 3rd party liability,15K per person medical, port insurance (for marinas)of 500K and total replacement cost of boat for three years from purchase date. I am with a canadian company and pay the equivalent of about USD 600 per year - that said I have never had an operating violation, accident or claim. (They missed a couple of opportunities to catch me over the speed limit LOL)

But when you calculate that payment based on the number of months the water isn't frozen in Canada its $300/month!!!! LOL (Just kidding)

I have Progressive. Just added our 2021 252SE to our policy, rate was much lower than I thought. We have various discounts, 3 vehicles and now 2 boats. Been with them for 10 years now.

I used to boat every year in Canada....the water was always "refreshing "!!!
was just at lake Erie the other day. Cousin rented a cottage along the beach and i went to visit. Outside air temperature 59F. I had to double up on sweaters. Lake water temperature 79F... It was weird to put my hand in lake water while wearing two sweaters only to have it feel like bath water LOL. But then again, the lake is only 200ft deep at its deepest... most other bodies of water here have already cooled down to the point of being "unswimmable".. that is if youre not a seasoned Canadian ;)
