Started the boat just now and hearing a strange whine right after and right before engine turns over. It's a 2019 SX195, sound like a starter to anyone else?

Dang! Partzilla wants $700 for OEM, YamahaPartsDirect wants $500. For a dang starter, this is funny. Amazon has China manufactured replacements for $100.

I don't hear too much there out of the ordinary. Boat is only a 2019? Little early for a starter to be going bad. I would bet your battery is aging and that is the difference you are hearing. I don't hear much there out of line.

@tdonoughue if you listen to the last 2 seconds after starting you can hear the starter still spinning. I'm pretty sure that its going bad. I did some searching on here and it seems like they can go bad pretty early in ownership. I agree with you I was surprised when that noise showed up. I ordered a replacement from SBT so we shall see if I'm correct.

If anything, I think that could be the solenoid being slow to disengage. Have had that happen on autos; some grease on the flywheel helped.

Do update us on what you find. I have been wrong before...

I ended up ordering the exhaust manifold gasket and the starter from SBT. When I install it I'll keep the thread updated.

If the starter spag is hanging up because it is starting to go it could be making the starter turn after power stops. This happens when the rollers in the sprag start to roll over too much. I have seen them do this before they go completely. If it is doing the same noise after you replace the starter then it could be that
The way you can test if the solenoid or ignition switch is sticking is with a test light stab the power wire that goes to the starters positive terminal. If something electrical is hanging it will stay lit after the key is released for the time you hear it still engaged. If the light goes out instantly its a mechanical problem in the sprag

These starters dont have that style engagement like a car. It just spins, doesn't spin out and inside

@Neutron so you're thinking that it's most likely the sprag and not the starter?

No, it could be the starter, its worth the try because its easy to do. I couldn't really hear it from your video. The starter gets a signal to turn, then stops when the signal stops. When it turns, it engages the starter clutch/sprag which is a one way roller sprag. This setup which is widely used on Motorcycles and watercraft. When they go bad the starter will still turn, it just doesn't lock the sprag which turns the crank.

It sounds like the starter is still spinning just a little. I don't recall if there is a separate starter relay or if it is all one unit. If it is one unit I am sure you are about to fix it with the new starter.

probably not the solenoid just the gear that spins out to engage the flywheel I would see if the shaft is dirty or rusted and spray some wd 40 on it When the starter is spinning it launches that drive gear out and when it stops spinning the gear retracts back so this would explain the issue or strange sound before and after it spins the engine over.

Once again yamaha never used that style starter. The gear only spins, it doesn't come out. It just spins. The starter gear is ALWAYS in contact with the starter clutch/sprag gear

To be clear, the starter gear is always spinning, but since the sprague clutch is not engaged the gear and housing just spin on the starter motor shaft?

And Bobs your uncle! You responded with this while I was posing my question. My dirt bike starters are the same

No the starter gear and the clutch stops spinning when not cranking. The rollers on the sprag only lock onto the sprag that makes the crank turn. Once the engine fires it disengages the rollers and the gear stops spinning. Its in an oil bath so it is always getting lubricated. The flywheel its attached by the bolt holes. There is a gear that goes through the center that freewheels on the hub of the crank and teeth of the gear are always in contact with the starter

I have changed many of these in anything from motorcycles to side by sides. Waverunners use it as well

@Neutron This is the assembly, correct? If the started is not the cause of the issue, we may need to talk little more.. lol..... definitely do not have the tools to take this apart. 1740326386247.png
