So... Remember being a kid and going to your toy box? Sometimes you'd catch a glimpse of an old favorite toy at the bottom of the box that you hadn't played with in a long time. One day you'd finally decide to dig down to the bottom of the box and pull it out. That's sort of what I did this weekend:

What you see before you is a VERY clean 1990 O'Day Daysailer 3. At 17 feet, I believe she is considered the largest crew-right-able sailboat ever made - or at least she was at one time. In other words, if you dump her over, you SHOULD be able to stand her back up by yourself. (I've never had the misfortune of needing to try.)

I believe the last time I had her out was in 2008 (maybe '07). She's been stuck behind the Yamaha in the storage unit every summer. This year I decided that she has a LOT better chance of seeing the water if she's conveniently located in my driveway. I've got a UV deflecting tarp that covers her down to her trailer wheels from stem to stern (it's dark under there even in direct sunlight) so I'm not too worried about her gel coat - but such is the price of being used.

I THOUGHT I was just bringing her home to putter around with her (that cuddy needs some storage solutions to make life easier) but the boys are ALL OVER me to go sailing so I guess I'm gonna have to refresh some old skills.

The only thing I really need to do to get her on the water (besides wash all the dust off) is make up an eye splice in the end of the new mainsheet I bought several years ago. A fid and pusher kit are on the way from Amazon and I've been watching old Englishmen demonstrate their double-braid splicing technique on You-Tube for the last couple of days. I shouldn't have any trouble.

I probably should check the wheel bearings in the trailer too. Sometimes grease can dry out from just sitting around.

Beyond that, there's a lot of little usability things that I always wanted to work on but don't need to be done to get on the lake. We'll see how it goes.

The Yamaha is "our" baby, but this one is "MY" baby. I think "Daddy Time" might be an appropriate name...

@Ilmmct Just to clarify something, A 'mud dauber' blocked pee hole will not cause an overheat. Those are only indicators to verify you have cooling water flow. It is likely the overheat was caused by too much water going backwards out the intake screen. Next time try clamping the hose between the intake screen and the Y fitting. This will force all water to flow to the engine and exhaust.

I did get an overheat warning when those holes were plugged up, from mud dobbers, I used trimmer string to clear and have not had another warning since. I recently performed the YDS and it showed this warning at the time of this issue, and I was new to this boat and did not check them from the get go. I check the water outlets every time we go out now.

As a young kid my parents had an O'Day 22 that we sailed and kept in a slip on a lake near Jackson, MS. It was a fun boat that I enjoyed once I got a little older, but I was terrified in the beginning. Come to find out its one of the heaviest sailboats for its length and because of that is self righting and will not turn over. Once a year my dad would pull it out of the lake and take it to the coast and sail in Mobile bay. It was named SLEIGHRIDE.

I can assure you this is not what you want to see when your son just launched the boat and is waiting for you at the dock and you're parking the trailer in the lot and about to hop out,

Luckily I've been through this before ( two years ago) and new I had time (and the last thing I say before I unhook the tow strap is "is the bilge pump on?"),
I just had to walk fast to the dock and hope we didn't drop it in the water. In about 5 minutes the bilge had just started to come on and when I opened the engine hatch a few minutes later the water was about 2 inches deep in the compartment.

Did you need to jump in or could you reach it from the swim deck or dock???
Just curious.

I made my son jump in, he could easily reach it in the water, I don't even think he had to put his head under,

Hidden little treasure at Lake Allatoona in GA. Pretty much just jet boats, pontoons and kayakers can access. Water level gets to under 2' at full pool on the way in. Jumping rock on the left and the water level is right at 10'
Totally a hidden little treasure place! That's first place we always go, BBQ lunch hangout till it warms up!

My wife sent me this picture. She ran into this yesterday and was quite incredulous.
I told her: Honey, I know that guy, he goes by @BareHand42Style.

Somewhere in Greater St. Louis, MO, I'm thinking Brentwood, Maplewood, maybe Richmond Heights? I'll ask.
Funny, she just did not think it was possible - what she was seeing. She said it was the craziest thing she has ever seen. (And the poor thing lives with me...)
