@Ronnie, I am surprised to see a resident of one of the most affluent areas of the US complaining about a thousand dollars or so in expenses.

I also am surprised by your extremely low opinion of the "flyover states". I believe that if you took some time to get to know us you would be pleasantly surprised.

I would like to extend an invitation for you to move to Arkansas. We have excellent lakes, low property taxes, no luxury taxes on boats, lost cost fuel and the individual opportunity to decide what positive steps to take for the environment. Additionally we have a wide range of racial diversity and your income would go much further with the low cost of living.

And I always wanted a hay field so I thought purchasing next to a decent size track would be a good compromise. The house we recently purchased has a great view of the lake in the back yard, and my front yard looks directly into what totals about 72 acres of hay field. 1 month after purchased, we get notification the land sold privately and is being developed into residential lots :banghead:

I guess the dream will continue...

Amen brutha... I'm replying to this because I added to my ignore list. I'd also like to say if you live in Carolina you live in Carolina. It don't matter if it's South or North. I grew up in Greer, SC which is about 35 minutes from Charlotte, NC. Saying I don't know NC is like saying someone in San Francisco doesn't know San Diego. Ignorant...

@Ramblin Wreck, if you want to work in a hay field fly out here. We have a few hundred acres that you can bale and I am sure that plenty of neighbors will be happy to let you enjoy their fields. @Betik can confirm the beauty of our hay fields.

I've never visited Arkansas nor have I driven through it but I've heard there's beautiful areas. They cut the field several months back and man they made it look easy. Of course the JD was fully enclosed so I imagine it was a nice ride. I might be wrong but believe they had the field cut, bailed, & hauled off in 48 hours. I was super impressed. It wasn't square bales but the big round ones. What's interesting is this 72 acre track is home to what I swear is a herd of deer. I rarely leave in the day and almost never at night without seeing deer. I believe the most we've counted within .5 mile from the house is approximately 35 on a single drive out. We regularly see 6+ each time we leave. It's going to be a bummer if the new homes push them elsewhere. When found this little one crying in our backyard. After about 6 hours, momma came back and it got up and ran away.

@Ramblin Wreck, hay needs to dry fully before being baled. Otherwise it will spontaneously combust. That makes for interesting but extremely difficult to extinguish fires. The hay slowly burns from the inside out and looks like steel wool burning.

My hay baling experience is on open cabbed tractors on 100° days. My Dad’s experience is waking beside a hay tailer throwing square bales onto the stack.

@Ronnie, I know that moving to Arkansas is a little far fetched but why not join us on Lake Ouachita on Sep 22? There will be plenty of boats. Fly into Little Rock and I will pick you up or get a direct flight to Dallas and I bet @Betik would be able to give you a ride.

Yeah, these boys had it nice but they were definitely in and out quickly. They may have cut it on day one and baled and hauled off day 2 but I can't exactly remember. I don't know anything about the process so that's interesting. I've spent an a ton of my summers growing up cutting grass or throwing tires when my dad had a service station, so I can imagine how quickly throwing square bales would get old. I guess it makes you appreciate the desk work now even more huh ;)

@Ramblin Wreck, a little less desk job and a little more hay baling would be good for me but I very much enjoy being out of the cattle business.

Was the grass dead and dry before they cut it?

This is what happens when you bail the grass the day after cutting. We have had new neighbors buy farms on both sides of ours and start 100+ acre fires this way.

@Ronnie if you fly to dallas we will love to bring you along. As matter of fact if you bring extra people you can have my truck ( or the Prius ).

As a general note I would like to add that me and wife enjoy Arkansas a lot. I grew up in Europe and my wife grew up in Koreans to us the natural makes us happy. The cynical Betik inside of me says that I am buttering up Bruce, but if I were to put pictures of me and Claire in Bimini vs. me and Claire in Hot Springs it will be very clear which ones we look happier. Even my kids they constantly ask to go back to Emma and Gavin’s place significantly more often than going to Orlando ( let alone Bimini).

I am sure Bruce and his family make awesome tour guides, but Claire and I had discovered Arkansas before we even knew about jetboaters.net. As matter of fact my kids first camping trip in their life was in Eureka Springs .

Which reminds me. When we checked in the lady said ; we have been waiting for you... when I asked why, she said “ we don’t get people with this kind of last names here “. Someone would this is discrimination of some sort, but they were very welcoming and willing to help us with equipment that we have forgotten. Even the next campsite folks ( clearly locals ) where very friendly and even asked for permission if they could stay late and chat outside their tent and wanted to make knowing our kids were light sleepers or not.

And while we are on the confession mode I will add one more thing. My wife who grew up in Korea came to US for school and finished undergraduate in NYC and graduate school from Cornel; she was 100% opposed to moving to Texas because she said “ in Texas there is only guns and cows”. As a birthday gift for me we visited Dallas in May of 2010. In February of 2011 she found a job in Dallas and left for Dallas with my unborn daughter in her uterus and my dog . While it took me over 1 year to find a job and move to dallas with her.

Hope this helps put some perceptive on how lack of contact could change perceptions

@Bruce.. . Growing up we did both square bails for horses and round baiks for cows..... The round baiks were easy.. . moved them with a tractor and set them down in the barn. . The square bails depends on one thing. How it was bailed.. Now wLk through a feild loading 500 bails by throwing 50 pound bails of hay onto a trailer sucked... But what really sucked is when we had to go load alfalfa! 75 pound bails held together with wire instead of bailing twine. That. .. Sucked.... !

If it was green grass and they round baked on the second day, they might have been making high moisture bales. Right after they baled did you notice if they wrapped them in a white plastic wrapper? The wrapper will help the bale ferment/cure without spontaneously combusting. Some dairy farmers do this when they don't have 3 days, ie. rain coming. Also, they may have hauled them away and wrapped elsewhere. If it was not dry, they will get moldy quickly or burn as @Bruce said.

That's correct. They where wrapped in white plastic. And all along I thought it was just cutting the field down. Who would have known there's much more to it. Very interesting....

Went out at 9am as any dew was burning off and made the first pass with the tedder to spread the windrows out to get the hay drying. Another pass this afternoon and it will be ready to rake back into windrows, by same time tomorrow am. Bale in pm.

This is what I want. Bad.

What's amazing is they are already approaching, albeit far from matching, specifications for traditional day cruisers. I bet EV open bow riders will kick a$$ in just couple years. Unbelievable!

I like it. Narrow beam and light displacement for a 28' boat. How stable will they be? I guess the batteries could be ballast for a keel that would help stabilize the boat. Its about time, submarines have been electric since 1888. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peral_Submarine
