Metal shavings coming out of rear drain plug.

Aloha Gang,

On my last outing when we were washing the boat at the harbor, I noticed little pieces of what looked like metal shavings(little pigtails) coming out the drain plug. So I jumped on the transom opened up the rear hatch, and pulled the inspection cover. I looked down inside seen some more of those metal shavings and what looked like a broken piece of a hose clamp. I’ve read a couple of threads and the metal shavings is common I guess the Yamaha assembly guys doesnt clean there mess. But has anyone seen pieces of hose clamps too? I’m going to pull the whole the top section out and do a full inspection of the area, but just was wondering if anybody else has seen this kind of stuff in there boat.

everybody does and being in salt water you should keep an eye on those hose clamps for rust, if an exhaust hose were to come loose you could be pumping water into your boat, many change them over to SS clamps, it might be a upgrade in a year or two for you,

Shavings are pretty normal for these boats. One of the first things one should do is clean out the bilge with a shop vac and hose to get rid of as much of this crap as possible. Otherwise the shavings will cut into the rubber o-ring on your drain plug and cause it to leak a little.

Yeah I’ll look into that, and will upgrade for sure if they aren’t. Corrosion our here is MEAN.

The clamps are "SS" but not really, they still corrode. CRC 6-56 or similar is your friend!

I had to vacuum out my bilge 3 times before I stopped seeing stuff (screws, metal shavings, plastic pieces, etc) back there as each trip out in the beginning would wash a little bit more crap back to the bilge from other places in the boat. I just would shove a shop vac hose down in there from the inspection hatch. Sounds like you may be replacing hose clamps but if you don't check them for being loose. I had 3-4 hose clamps that were not tightened down and just hanging on the hoses. Love the boat but the quality control is bad - definitely worth doing a full inspection of the details.

@rkim808 I've been boating in the salt for seven seasons now finding rotted clamps on a few occasions. I've migrate to the stainless steel T style clamps. They are a solid band rather than a slotted band as pictured on the right. Measure your old clamps carefully as the T style clamps only have about an inch and a half of adjustment unlike the radiator type clamp.

Oh wow mahalo(thank u) Gym, those look solid. I see what u mean as far as adjustability. I probably would have to order those online, don’t think the local stores or shops would have them. Great idea

Mine all had hoses but some of the hose do run down and just drain to the floor behind the side walls. I don’t find this to be an issue as not much water ever gets in those except when raining or washing and in that case the whole boat is wet anyway. The swim deck ones would be the only ones getting water in them all the time and those have hoses that drain back out to the lower swim deck.

I was thinking those universal stick on weather stripping u can get by the foot. Stick on the fiberglass bellow the seat around the edge of the compartment hole. That way when the seat is down it makes a seal, just a thought.

So just got through inspecting the whole transom/exhaust compartment. All the clamps were on the looser side. Reached down and grabbed out those broken/cut pieces of clamp. And tried to see if any of the clamps was the ones that it came off off. And none of them were cut or broken. These look more cut then broke, but don’t know where they came from. Hmmmm?

Aloha njmr2fan, yeah found out the shaving is a common thing but the broken clamps baffles me. And I thought I would’ve found where it came from after doing my inspection, but no dice not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing.
