ok so i have come to realize that my Bilge pump does NOT cycle on and off as described in the owners manual.

I turn my battery switch ON and the Bilge Switch ON (red light on) and the pump hums nonstop! no cycling what so ever. this is a concerns for me since i will be leaving boat in the water for 7 days with mini access to shore power.

i have searched through the boards and have not found a definitive answer to my question.....

can someone tell me if their bilge pump actually cycles on and off as per the owner manual? And if not, how do i set it up so that it only turns on when it senses water

is the 210 bilge ran through the conext system? I know on the 240 there are three settings not sure which is what but one is off another turns blue on the screen and another green I always imagined one was on full time the other was the cycle setting but not 100% sure I guess I should really look at mine better too to see which is doing what.

No my SX210 has the Connext system 4.3 screen - no boating functions are controlled through it. my operates through a 2 way rocker switch "on" or "off". id love to operate it as switch turn on and bilge automatic

I agree the wires are already their you could easily flip it out for one on a float switch.

My guess is there is something stuck in the pump causing pressure on the impeller in the pump. Undo the clips on each side and clean it out....you will also see if it is spinning freely while you do this test.

(this is an annual maintenance item for me)

They could have also connected the wrong wire instead of auto they could have hooked up the constant mode. I would imagine it still came as a three wire unit and Yamaha just uses two.

The pump has 3 wires and 3 wires connected to the connector to the harness.

i will definitely un clip it and check it out!

Did it ever work properly? If so then its either clogged or the sensor is fried. Unclipping it should help answer the question...

And please post your results...we love to learn

On my 210 FSH, I found the bilge pump is wired direct to the battery. Not even through the battery switches. It's always on. I tested that by leaving the battery switches off and pressing the test button on the side of the bilge pump. It still cycled.

The new pumps do not cycle on to check for resistance. It must have a electronic sensor that is not conducting electricity (thus no battery draw) until it senses water, and then the pump turns on. The switch on the dash seems to be a manual override turning the pump full on, not just the cycle check.

You are correct, the new boats have a Rulemate 500 bilge pump!

  • Features a solid state water sensing technology that eliminates the need for a separate float switch
  • Pump turns on when water level rises and shuts off when water is removed, will not pump oil — straight motor oil that enters the bilge will not turn the pump on
  • Snap-off strainer for easy cleaning
  • Anti-fouling impeller
So happy to see Yamaha has moved to this pump over the back pressure one. Now we'll need to see how much it draws (as I have to assume it takes some power for it to sense water vs a float that takes none) so we'll know how long it will last on a single battery.

***UPDATE***

so yesterday with the battery SWITCH OFF i decided to fill my bilge /engine are with fresh water and behold!!!! the bilge automaticly turn ON and pumped in dry! its safe to say that the bilge is wired for automatic operation with a manual override "always "on".

which leads me to believe that the yamaha owners manual states to turn the switch on as a precaution because they probably doesn't trust the automatic sensing technology that comes with bilge pump.

That's good news. I think Yamaha just made a model change and didn't catch the documentation up to that. It should state to use the Bilge Pump switch for testing or manual override of the bilge pump.

What Frank said...the Yamaha manual hasn't caught up with the new pump they are installing. You are good to go! Do not leave it on pumping dry....it will burn out and or kill your battery...
