Before I make a hole in the body, can anyone think of why I should not place my VHF antenna next to the rear light receptacle?

I can access the underside through the rear compartments and easily run the wire forward. Is the area too thin? My antenna is a 8’ quick connect type (Pacific Aerials, not Shakespeare).

From what I've read around here, I think height would be the main reason. Higher placement for better or farther reception, hopefully someone else can chime in

I think it is a great location. Could also use it as a pole for a (small size) ship flag with plastic clippers. With an 8’ I would not worry about height much.
Two possible considerations (based on my own experience):

1. Someone accidentally grubbing the antenna while playing in the stern area/swim deck - kids do darned things when they are in “play mode”

2. Potential EM interference? - if the antenna cable run (which would be long here) is next to/parallel to the factory harness.
This would likely only apply to transmission mode in high power, but it can really jolt some electronics.

I originally was going to use this stainless steel mount (first pic), but decided on the smaller profile (second pic) to allow the mooring cover to fit with less rubbage. I'll route the cable away from any other cables along the starboard side.

Decided to use the P6159 mount near the stern light receptacle. This allows me to remove the rotating portion with very minimal mooring cover contact and place it in the starboard compartment. My plan is to use the antenna when traveling offshore, and use the handheld when within the Bay Area. The 8' Antenna fits in the ski locker, held in place using the stern light brackets, for now. Gonna get some of these 3M Command mounts.
