Was installing kilmat to replace the foam which literally disintegrated into a million pieces today totally out of the blue. Pieces broken off all just sitting on the engine. I had the kilmat ordered already so as good a time as any I suppose. However, noticed the APS units covered in crap. Probably the PO trying to fix stiff throttles not knowing shifter cables were toast. They seem to be working fine....anything to be concerned about?

is the "crap" sticky? Might be grease. I've seen grease of that color before.

It almost looks like grease that has been really wet.
Is this one of those things that shouldn’t be there but if it’s working leave it alone?

If it was me, I would clean it up with electronic contact cleaner or similar if you really wanted to clean it.

My only concern is that you don't know what it is. but as you say it has been working just fine. May ask PO what it was if that's an option?

I just asked him....he said he used to spray it with “the stuff in the white can” to loosen the throttles. I remember him mentioning something about that during the sea trial but I wasn’t paying attention because I already figured it was the shifter cable.

The white can I remember he gave me was boeshield t9. Could repeated applications of t9 look like that?

Developed by The Boeing Company for lubrication and protection of aircraft components. It is a combination of solvents lubricants & waxes designed for penetration moisture displacement lubrication & protection. It dries to a thin waxy film that clings to metal for months.

Found this on a search.

I bet the wax is what makes it look milky to me. I could see where it would help protect from salt water corrosion.

T9 is good stuff.....just never seen anyone spray that much on. I'd probably wipe it off and spray it lightly with a fresh coat.

On the subject of the Kilmat, I just took all the nasty foam off my SX230 and the Kilmat looks great but doens't sound dampen as well as I like. I used bug and tar remover to get the old adheasive off. Also I used the 80 mil Kilmat. How did yours turn out? I will post a pic later.
