Boat Registration Numbers

Here in IL, they will pull you over for numbering violations. I have several friends that have experienced this. Letter have to be block, 3in tall and sections seperated by spaces. Also, the letters must contrast greatly with the surface to which they are mounted.

Each year prior to launcing at the Chicago Loop Cruise, there are auxilary Coast Guard units that conduct voluntary safety checks and issue the sticker for that year as proof that you have passed the check. My letters are block but aparently do not contrast enough. Each year I get warned that my letters are not enough contrast and cannot be seen from 100 ft away. Each year I tell them thanks, I will take care of it, but never manage to get around to it and I take my chances. So far, so good. However, I do plan to change them this year as my luck will surely run out. Currently they are the grey that matches the top of my seats and they sit on top of my Royal Blue hull below the rub rail. I will keep them in the same location but change them to white.

I guess they are hard to read:

There are stickers on your boat in that picture Neil? LOL

Mine are black background with orange reflective front, look really cool at night when a light shines on them.
