Also, would putting kilmat under marine mat on the topside of the engine lid reduce engine noise?

I think the answer to both would be "Yes"....the question is by how much. Not sure marine mat on its own would make much difference.

I was hesitant to answer this as well. I did put it on the top side where you walk as you stated and I have the same boat. I'll be honest the engine noise never really bothered me so I can't say for sure if it reduced it or not. When I read your question I thought about it and said yeah maybe it is quieter but I never gave it thought before that and it was not a factor in me purchasing this product.

I don't think exterior mat would help enough to notice.

The engine cover has a foam sound suppression material bonded to the underneath side.
The foam absorbs sound waves and reduces the transfer of sound vibration thru the engine cover, but no where else.
Foam absorbs noise and also reduces reverberation.
Egg crate foam soundproofing is widely used in recording studios, home theaters for this reason.

I thought that same foam could be used to loosely blanket the top and around the engine.
This blanket could be simply laid and tucked around the engine and easily removed.
I have not tried this and would be interested what other thought.

well putting seat cushions helped alot... I used closed cell neoprene foam.... some sound deadening mat to install in the inside yet... and ill be putting some custom marine mat on some of the exposed deck over the engine compartment when i get to installing all the new marine mat... make sure the rubber seals are in good shape..

and honestly the 4 strokes are way quieter than the 2 stokes...
