I make an annual trip at the end of each summer from Long Island NY to Outer Banks NC. It is 500 miles each way. Coming in and out of NYC is an absolute nightmare. People constantly cutting you off, road conditions are horrendous and the traffic can make a 9hr drive a 12hr drive.
I like to be self sufficient when I am on a long haul. I bring a floor jack, compressor, spare tire(s) air tools and appropriate sockets. If I have a problem I am most likely prepared for it.
We are on the return leg from Dallas to Page, Az. and back. Funny thing is, we did this trip last year and fell about 200 miles short. So last year 1800 round trip, this year, 2200 round trip. Editorial comment...Lake Powell is worth the trip for the far side of the world.
We towed the boat to Beaver Lake, Arkansas and then on to Grand Lake, Oklahoma in June (1,300 mile rountrip) and to Shelbyville in July (1,200 mile round trip).
Purchased my boat in PA drove home to Chesapeake VA first time trailering a boat monsoon rain storms hits as soon as I pulled of of boat dealership it was a foot deep of water in the mountain roads my temporary plate was gone when I got home and burnt two lights out on the trailer melted the sockets to the bulbs I was a nervous as hell on that trip but made it back
Believe it or not, I slow down to 60~65mph depending on wind. I travel w/ a cover....so I'm not in a big ass hurry anyway...so 63 is my sweet spot. I think the Tundra could go a little faster if I had to. Wax the boat, especially forward, drop poles, tighten everything, grease bearings and run air pressure 2lbs under recommended max. Other stuff I can't think of to type out But driving Columbus to Cumberland then 10 days later making that drive to Shelbyville is long. Back to Columbus (north in Delaware Co) from Shelbyville is easy. I used to know the numbers....too lazy to mapquest it out. Some would say....a long ass way. Worth every mile too
That post is almost a decade old and the poster hasn’t been on here since August. Might be a while before they reply but it’s not a bad thread to revive.
So far, from RC to Bullfrog marina, roughly 1800 miles round trip. If my travel plans work out for the spring it will be down to Bullhead city and Lake Mojave which will be roughly 2500 miles round trip.
Edit; after re reading a post above I thought I’d include that I do carry an extra wheel bearing set & seals, bearing buddies, grease/grease gun and tools, and I run Goodyear Endurance tires set at 65 psi cold. I also try to make sure the boat trailer and tires are properly maintained before heading out so that all I have to do is make checks while on the road including using a heat gun to check the trailer hubs. My truck has the ability to monitor trailer tire TPMS and I’ll be looking to add those to the trailer tires this next year. FWIW, I also carry a spare set of impellers and all the tools & materials required to R&R the pumps and impellers in an action packer crate when I make long trips.
We go to the Destin FL area each year from Louisville KY area. ~1,300mi round trip with the trailer.
Have a trip in June planned to take the boat to St Augustine. We'll have moved to Buffalo by then. ~1,050 mi ONE WAY!.......oof, what have I signed up for?!?
