We are going to the Turks at the end of October and are watching Hurricane Irma as it is currently projected to go just south of the Turks (which would be really bad)....

@scopeusa hoping this path changes for your sake and those on the island!!!!

I have a friend on vacation in St Maarten right now they are stuck there all the flights booked out and the airport is now closed as it should be. It should be an interesting 24 hours for her boyfriend and her.

I was born and grew up in St. Thomas, so I have tons of family there including my parents. St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John and Tortola all house my family and are all in the projected path. Everyone is getting prepared but this one has everyone more on edge than normal. Please keep all the residents of each island in your thoughts and prayers.

Latest report I've just read is that the four "most solid" buildings in Saint Martin, have been destroyed, not good, not good at all.

I just read the airport in St Martin (famous for jets sandblasting beachgoers right across the street from the runway) has been "destroyed." No other details. Some of the video from the various islands that have been hit are... just incredible.

Hope and pray that all those in harm's way do everything possible to stay safe. As the sergeant on Hill Street Blues used to say, "Let's be careful out there!"

I can't imagine having those types of seas near Bimini. Do they even have an area that's 40ft above sea level? That kind of storm surge would be devastating.

The storm surge was 8.5' in Barbado.

The runway at the South Bimini Airport is at 8' above seal level. The highest point in Bimini is 26' above sea level.

I suspect that the people who have not evacuated and the places we enjoy are up for quite a ride.

Most if not all the marinas were empty yesterday

Yep, this looks really bad... Not looking forward to the aftermath. The only place standing may be the Dolphin House.

The wave forecast for Bimini itself is 18.5'. I am not sure if that includes the storm surge or not.

terrifying. I was transfixed on the weather news this morning. Some of those Islands are devastated. Ive only ever been to Nassau, Bahamas down there, but trying to imagine 20 ft surge there..Knowing that island makes me wonder if it would be there at all after this.

secondly. A report just said "weakened" from 180 to 175. I'm not sure ID even count that.

incredible. early predictions show eye heading RIGHT smack up the middle of florida. I hope everyone is heeding warnings and gettin the F outta dodge if they can. Imagining trying to ride that out, and I just cant. I whimper when theres sustained 30 or 40mph winds here.

then I see another one poppin up behind it....

good luck everyone seriously

Praying for them! Those islands at going to get hit hard. The storm surge is a lot but that also doesn't factor in all the additional rain that will fall.

"The hurricane center said 15 to 20 feet of surge will be possible in the Turks and Caicos and the southeastern and central Bahamas, which were hit hard just last year by Category 4 Hurricane Matthew.

In addition, those areas could get 8-12 inches of rain, with isolated amounts of 20 inches possible."

@Peelz I have been through quite a few hurricanes in my lifetime, growing up in the Cayman Islands. Last Cat 5 I was in was Ivan back in 2004 and that was on a 23 mile long island with 220+ mph gusting winds right before I moved to the US for school.

The T&C and smaller Bahamian islands are going to get beat up pretty good. The fact that they, like my country, stupidly removed integral mangroves are what results in most of the damage from seas. The rain doesn't bother the islands as much because it runs off into the sea pretty quickly unless they have hills which can cause mud slides as what happens in Haiti every year.

For those that live on the east coast of Florida storm surge is their biggest worry along with the wind and rain. I'm in Orlando, a little over 50 miles from the coast. It will get windy here but not like Daytona Beach will experience. Wife and I are both island born so we are planning to ride it out as we have many times before and pray that it keeps moving eastward for the sake of everyone on the coast.
