I live in a city. I was walking home from a bar and texting someone I just met. Out of nowhere some ghetto piece of trash says "thank you buddy" and takes my iPhone right out of my hands. He was on a bike so I had no chance. iPhone stolen.

I haven't backed up in a few weeks. And to top it off I'm like 4 months away from an upgrade. So I'm going to have to pay full price for a new iPhone and yet again get stuck with an older phone for 2 years.

Oh ya, it's the first day of my vacation and I'm going away later today. Way to set the mood...

That sucks. It also sucks how dependent we've become on our hand held technology. Funny how we get sucked in so easily. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't let it spoil your vacation.
Papa

I have a 3Gs that was on AT&T's network that you could borrow if you replace the screen. I say borrow because my family and I are over a year from being upgrade eligible so I may need it if we lose or break one of our 4S/5S models.

@Skysurfer2010 that sucks. Sorry to hear that. Nothing good ever happens after midnight!

I also have an iPhone 4 Att that you are welcome to borrow for a few months. It also has a cracked up screen.

No one with you to call the cops and then track the phone (using find my phone)? Nowadays stealing phones has to be risky....or perhaps they know to shut them down immediately?

Thanks for posting this though....will certainly make me be more aware...

Here is what you might try. If you have a family member or friend that has a family plan with several members they probably are due for at least one upgrade that they might let you take or use until yours is due. I have done this several times. Not that this will help you now @Skysurfer2010 but I have three people on my plan so I keep two older phones in a drawer just incase one breaks, lost or stolen.

Just a side note...Because smart phone theft is so rampid the cell phone companies are under pressure to come out with anti theft software that would render the phone unusable to anybody but the owner. We'll see how this plays out.

On my android I installed an app that I can track gps location and remote wipe if it does get stolen. I have used it once when my phone was brand new and my buddy picked up my phone and took it home. I gpsed the location to his house and called him up. It was one of "those" evenings and he did this by accident.

Was it @mattschepker ? Lol!

They shouldn't be able to disable Find my iPhone without your password so assuming you still have battery remaining you should be able to track it down. @Skysurfer2010

Had a case where "Find my iPhone" app was used and it took us right to the persons bedroom in there house, literally !!! You should look into that asap !!

Yes, Find my iphone has saved me once before as well... probably my favorite app. In addition, I can't tell you how many times it has been used to find my wifes iphone that wasn't stolen, but certainly was lost!

@Skysurfer2010 which carrier was this phone for? I may be able to help also depending on who the phone is with.

Thanks guys. Really nice of everyone to offer to borrow a phone but it's one of those things I refuse to borrow. Phones get broken too easily and I'd be way too worried of damaging someone else's phone. I have a friend who is offering his upgrade to me. I'm not sure if they'll do it, but he's insisting that they'll let him get his upgrade and then give it to me.

I have AT&T. Way to start my vacation today!! And apparently this is a big thing in Philly and I'm sure all major cities.

I deactivated my phone number through AT&T immediately and also tried tracking it. Living in the city it's next to impossible with so many apartment complexes to track it to one doorstep. I wiped it on iCloud but it will only do that if the person hooks it up to iTunes.

You might try going to an Apple store. I was in similar condition, only my screen quit working, was not in the upgrade zone, so I called Apple. They said they would give me a discount on the phone and it would not be full price. So I ended up replacing my IPhone 5 for $249.

For 4 months on AT&T I would get the Nokia 520/1/2 (whatever number ATT has). It is a Windows Phone but it is $99 with no contract. It will do enough to tide you over until you are ready for an upgrade.

Bummer, I wish there was a "Find My Wallet" app, since mine was stolen last week.

Our deductible for our iPhones is $175 that applies to theft or unrepeatable damage.. but that is through Verizon and T-Mobile....
