So our new 2015 SX240 is finally home. Below are my initial thoughts about the boat. Most of my comparisons are based on our experience on the 2013 SX190 as that is the only boat we have owned. We did not get to take her out after the dealer as this was our Easter weekend and had many family events planned.

Size: This is a big boat compared the SX190. Heck she is even makes our Expedition EL look small. I was worried if she would fit in the driveway, but she did. So much more room for family and friends.

Towing: Our truck tows her with no problem. As this is our first boat with trailer breaks, I did find it odd that there was a small bump when starting from a stop. I found that just taking my foot off the break and letting the truck have a slight roll, reduced the bump. The dealer rep told me about that before left. I had mastered the backing up and launching the SX190 very easily. This size boat will require some more time as blind spots are larger. Now is it me or does anyone else get people tailgating? I could see shadows of cars at the traffic light and they appeared to be way too close. Maybe they were checking out the jets?

Storage: Lots of it. Was able to put all our supplies in and still had extra room. The ski locker is just huge, found my new dog house when I get in trouble with the wife. The hinged seats are definitely a bonus and makes accessing the gear easier. Head compartment is nice to have. I will definitely add some additional storage that others have shown in other threads. We have a port-a-potty, just need to figure how to hold it in place.

Engine Noise: Such a huge change. I was worried it would still be noisy since we went from single engine to twin engine. It is even quieter that the SX190. Had a conversation with the dealer’s rep with slightly above normal speaking voice while test driving. My daughter hated the noise in the SX190, as she would cover her ears when we were underway.
Steering: Very responsive even at low speeds. I did notice a bit of a vibration in the throttles but it seemed to go away at some point. Maybe it was based on the engines syncing at a certain RPM and balanced out.

Connext: Straight forward use, all information you need at a glance. As others have said, it would be great to have had a navigation system and fish finder. Visible in direct sunlight and with polarized glasses.

Ride: It was a bit windy on Saturday so there was some chop during the test drive. I noticed that when we hit a wave head on, I could barely feel the hit, but then I was waiting for the drop down slam on the back end of the wave like our SX190 had, no slam, Bonus!!! Running parallel to the waves did not bounce us around like the SX190. That made the wife happy.

Things I did not like.

Bimini Top: It is very tight. Maybe because it is new and needs to stretch a bit? It made connecting the posts difficult. Also found one of the windshield frame mounts was at an odd angle and could not get the bolt in.

The storage areas behind the seat backs – The fiberglass is cut like crap. Looks like a kid did it. I thought they used automated robots? The caulk made it difficult to see.

The dealer is looking in to both the issues related to the fiberglass and bimini mount.
Overall this boat is great and will allow us to venture to places the SX190 could not get to due to rough waters.

Planned Upgrades
1. Speakers: The base ones look sooo cheap with new interior, will be upgrading with Polks.
2. Jet Boaters Spare tire cover
3. New Stoltz bow roller
4. Jet Boaters stickers..cars will get them also
5. Storage in the head compartment
6. SeaDek..next year…

Final thought, we want to buy a Magma Grill and use the table pole to mount it, but the table pole does not have a mounting plate to attach to. What is everyone else using?
I will post pictures later.

Congratulations. You've got a great summer awaiting you and the family, enjoy the boat in good health and be safe!

Do you usually boat out in the Great South Bay? Where do you launch, Wantagh?

Those are my old stomping grounds as a kid. Yep, fond memories of sinking my first boat out there.

Congrats!. I will be upgrading my speakers soon. Maybe you want my Polks. Been on the water twice, so virtually new.

@Glassman Thanks. We launch out of John J. Burns Park as it is part of the Town of Oyster Bay so fees are lower. We mostly boat in the GSB as there are great coves to hang out in.
If we are fishing we will head to LI Sound and sometimes head over to Connecticut. We will be spending more time on the Sound this year as there are a few events that we can boat to like the Light House Concert in Huntington…

@OperationROL , thanks, however they were delivered and completing install... they look so much nicer...

@Zeus2013: Nice ! Really NICE write-up. You said everything many of us have been saying for months now .......
That the 2015 24-foot Yamahas are ALL NEW BOATS ! Not just a model year change/increase.
Liked the way you summarized your points. Well said. :winkingthumbsup"
If I can help you in any way, re: Audio, On-board chargers, mounting methods, radio antennas, please PM me,. Happy to help you.
Best Wishes for the Best Boating year you've ever enjoyed !

Nice write up @Zeus2013 and thank you for confirming all my queries I had with upgrading as you have from a 190.
The rough water being the biggest plus but having much more room is so nice, I'm surprised you feel the boat is so much larger, is this on the water or just on the trailer?
Have a great summer, it'll be a blast

@Britboater In the water and on the trailer. If you ever see the two boats side-by-side, you will see what I mean. Are you buying a 2015 240?

Thanks everyone. One thing I found today that I absolutely hate is the location of the engine flush ports. The center of the port is just below or at the level of the cushion. I have the Salt-Away kit and it does not fit without pushing down the cushion. Now I need to rig a fitting so it works better. I do not like the pressure the cushion puts on the nipple fitting. The port should be higher. Are you listening Yamaha engineers...It's all about the details...

We decided last minute to take her out today as the weather was great. The kids had a great time. In the 190 my daughter hated the engine noise and used to whine and cover her ears. Today while cursing around, both my kids fell asleep sitting in the back with my wife. This is the first time my daughter wanted to go back out on the boat. Last year she wanted to get out fast. To me that says a lot about the engine sound.

Now, I believe a majority of the noise we still get comes more from below in the hull. That could be significantly reduced if Yamaha could some how get sound baffles below. Just my 2 cents worth.

We also upgraded from the 19' to the 24' line (2014 242L) and have not looked back.
Your boat looks great, the yacht blue is a striking color, our 19' was the same blue.

I checked out the 2015's at the local stealership and the new captains chairs are by far my favorite selling point. They seem to be a major upgrade from the earlier seats.

Enjoy your new boat!

Congratulations on the new boat! Perfect timing to enjoy the summer. Thank you for the in-depth review.

The bimini is a breeze to install. I think you may have a fouled up post mount, they should swivel easily to align. As far as tightness, mine has the straps and they are adjustable, so it shouldn't take much to walk it forward and hook the small poles, and they too look adjustable, are they? It is all about learning the easy way to set it up, and that bimini is different than years past, so it may take more effort, but practice makes perfect. I like the looks of it, it is bigger! And that is golden in my book. Congrats on the upgrade, yes, it is a BIG boat, FIVE FEET LONGER than your 190 was, and it has all that weight increase too. Be careful docking or trailering and don't get between it and anything else, it's mass can squash someone!

@Zeus2013 ...... As 1 of his many, constant efforts to contribute adding to our boating community, Will from @JetBoatPilot has actually made a youtube video that totally explains how to both A) set up properly, and B) store the bimini top on Yamaha 2015 24-foot boats. Hope this helps you & others, Mikey Lulejian - Lake Oconee, GA
Note to Moderators: This video is so useful & important it possibly should be added to our FAQ section.

The mount is in the wrong place. It needs to be rotated up slightly. However the mount does not fit if rotated up...off to the dealer.

That video won't help with the top on the SX is vastly different than the bimini on a tower'ed boat, such as the AR240 and the 242LS in Will's video. But it is a good video nonetheless! Hope the bimini is an easy fix. It's funny, some people remove and never use the bimini, sun worshipers I guess, others can't live without it. To me, the bimini is integral and a must, so the improvements they have made in the way it works and fits are great in terms of tightness and resistance to bounce and wind. But the added effort to assemble and stow is a PIA, hopefully they are achieving a good balance with that. I would love to see your bimini and how it functions. I love the SX and don't need a tower, but the new tower is very nice and a long way from the early days. Keep us posted, and maybe you can shoot a video of the bimini and post to YouTube, and link to here. Embedded videos take up too much band width and there are just too many places like YouTube to link to and make video easy.
