I'm new to jet boats and and the forum and just recently wrapped my first ski rope around the impeller shaft. Great experience that was.

Some background. After limping home on one engine at 8mph or less i finally make it back to the ramp. I cut off all the rope I could then realized I would have to remove the jet pump to get the rest. Several forum members were very helpful to me with that process. I removed and reinstalled the jet pump as all looked ok then tested the starboard engine (this is the one that had the rope around the shaft) with a hose in the driveway and it now seems to have a metallic, rattling sound to it. I tested the port side engine the same way and very smooth with no metallic rattling sound. The boat is fairly new to me and haven't noticed it before but honestly could have already been there. The rattling only happens at low idle. Once I apply on a small amount of throttle it quiets down. Boat has 130 hours.

It was hard to tell if the noise was from the engine or the pump but seemed to me it was more in the impeller area. Any thoughts or feedback is appreciated.

Planning a lake run to further assess the noise to see if it's still there under more load.

I wonder if it could use a little moly grease on the splines of the impeller shaft.(?)

A few thoughts:

- are you sure you got all the rope out? I had this happen a couple of years ago and rope got stuck in behind the white sleeve. I didn’t actually find it until I took the sleeve off (had to because it was damaged)

- when you took the pump off, did you see any damage to the white sleeve? I ask this because in your pic it looks a little crooked

- the other thought is that the impeller may be contacting the tunnel. Can you see any evidence of contact? It should be coming very close but not contacting

I'll offer a different perspective, when running the engines on-land with a hose it's very common to have a metallic rattling noise, to not hear that noise in your non-roped engine seems to be more odd.

Taking a quick video (with audio) might help too. I suspect isn't just the normal "barrel of bolts" sounds these boats make out of the water! The impeller touches the side of the pump and makes metal on metal sounds.

@Dave burke what symptoms did you have when you had rope still stuck behind the white sleeve?

Thanks for all the feedback.
I did some additional inspections. The impeller shaft plastic insert on the starboard side (where the rope was) doesn't appear to be damaged. Exactly the same as port side. I inspected the sleeves on both sides they look nearly identical no damage to either. I didn't see any remaining rope. Tomorrow I will put it in the water and see if there are performance issues and if the rattling persists. Like the suggestions of grabbing a video should have done that the other day...duhhh. Stay tuned
