Hooked up an amplified sub this past week and noticed something of concern.

When I turn the key off and shut everything down the amp light is still on. It doesn't turn off until the batteries are switched off. I have the Amp positive running directly to the house battery. So the issue is if I wet slip it I need to leave the batteries on for the bilge and the amp will be drawing power too.

Why doesn't the remote on/off operate with the keys?

Any ideas?

The remote wire should come off your head unit (blue/white stripe typically) and be on when your radio is on, off when it's off. Where did you get your remote wire from? Does the amp turn on immediately when the batteries turn on?

That is the wire I connected to coming off the head unit. Good question about the Amp turning on when I switch the batteries on. I'll check that. But it seems that the Amp should turn off with the keys right?

If you have it connected to the head unit the keys wont have anything to do with it going off or on. If the head unit is on it will be on if the head unit is off it should be off but the head unit may have to be completely off I have seen some units if they have power running to them and the clock or something is still on where the amp will stay on.

That's kind of what I suspected and that somewhat defeats the purpose of a remote. I'll have to remember to pull the fuse if I'm wet slipping the boat.

Surely I'm not the first to notice this.
Does anyone have a solution?

You could install a cheap toggle switch to the remote wire and that would kill the amp or a toggle switch to the head unit to completely kill the head unit which maybe the better option so its not draining your battery as well.

That's not a bad idea. I ran the remote and RCAs down the starboard side and it would be easy to add a switch in the throttle area.

I am not sure what your wiring is. If you wired the amp's remote wire to the stereo's remote wire out, it should shut off when your radio is shut off, which on your boat is when Connext is shut off, which should be when the keys are shut off. A very long run on sentence but should be accurate. I have 4 amps and all are wired that way and work correctly. Perhaps, make sure you wired the remote wire correctly first.

Do the 2016 boats not have an on/off toggle switch to turn the stereo on and off? Or is it in the Connext that you have to turn the head unit off?

I recall seeing a dip switch to turn on and off remote triggers on some equipment. Worth a look on your sub.

There is no toggle switch for the radio. It uses the connext system as the remote turn on.

I have mines connected to the ignition wire going to the radio, this way they turn on/off with the keys.

@OperationROL is correct and it is how mine works as well. That said this the second case in about as many months that I can recall someone saying the same thing and being sure that they hooked everything up correctly. Are there two blue wires behind the helm? Are the leads at the amp accidently jumped. Is there an option on the amp for always on or remote turn on? What brand is the amp? I will only use JL Audio or Wetsounds in a boat.

To troubleshoot start at the amp. Does it still turn on if the blue wire is not connected. If not then test for voltage with the keys both on and off at the amp end of the blue wire with it still disconnected. This should help figure out what is going on.

The problem you are running into is that you most likely have your amps connected directly to your battery. I would think your amp is too big to connect to the stereo power. In this setup there is really no way around it. Since your amp needs high voltage it will need to be connect to the battery. Best thing I can say is to install the perg switch next to you in the helm. Otherwise you will have to switch the battery off to turn off power to the amps. On the side note, the amp being on without the radio on has no concerns as you are not drawing any relevant power. It's just in stand by mode. You can leave it like that all day with no problems unless the amp is faulty. I wouldn't worry too much about it or you can do what I do, "turn all battery switches off when not in use". That will cut power to everything.

Sorry, but this is not correct. You can connect your amps directly to the battery and still have them shut down automatically when the Head unit is shut off. You simply need to connect the remote amp wire to them.

I wonder if shutting down the connext screen without first shutting down the HU might play a role on this. I've never checked to see if the amps in mine are shutting off properly, but need to now!

I understand that @Julian. But with the connext the remote for some reason still has hot signal. I have tried to trouble shoot this all summer on my setup. Ran relays, even thought about running relay delay timer. My JL will not shut off when connect goes off. I'm suspecting that the connect's radio gate is still powered, might be the culprit.

That's what I'm thinking as well. As soon as I turn the batteries off the amp shuts off. Leads me to believe that the remote is still hot even though it has been turned off. Frustrating because what's the point of a remote wire.

Potentially a dangerous situation. Yamaha should be made aware of this and correct it ASAP.

Something just dawned on me. The radio runs through the Connex system. So does the bilge pump. The pump operates even when the connex is powered off which means the system is still hot. I'll put a meter on it this weekend to confirm.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but you've tried powering off the radio on its own while the Connext is still on...yes?
