I bought a new 2016 242 Limited S about a month ago. The dealer had provided at least one test drive on the boat in salt water. They "assured" me they thoroughly flush engines and wash everything down after operating in salt water.

However, both of my props have about an inch of surface rust on each blade that I noticed when I previewed boat but they tried to tell me it was just buildup and it would come off.
Anyone have rust on their props and do you think Yamaha will replace under warranty since it was there when I bought it? Is it even worth them tearing my unit down to get to them for replacement?

Also, anything to be concerned with if they didnt flush the engines properly and salt water sat in the engine for 4-5 months before I bought it?

Thanks

Photos of the props would be very helpful.

Since it is a demo boat....I hope you got a demo price?

Keep in mind that the impellers are aluminium and can't rust. There could be a corrosion of some kind based on the water type it what run in. The flushing won't get to the impeller blades to clean them. Given the newness of the boat any corrosion should come off, BUT I would make sure the dealer does that. Cam.

The OEM impellers are NOT aluminum. Some kind of SS, albeit those are fairly soft and they can rust.
They look like aluminum off the shelf (stock), but here is one that's been redone properly (by Glen at the Skat factory):

That said @Pullen724 I would not worry too much about the impellers themselves. But rust may indicate the engines/pumps were not flushed properly, w/Salt-away or soap etc., which can lead to issues downstream.

Thanks for the responses. I will take some pics in the morning and post them after taking a closer look to see if it can come off easy or not.

As for the internal engine components that may have been exposed to the salt for 4-5 months, anyway of checking that out now or do I just have to keep my fingers crossed for no problems later on?

Rust on a stainless impeller, are you sure it isn't just a stain of some sort I have over 400 hours of salt water use and I have no rust on mine. I just did both my pump liner housings , I had the pumps apart with no rust visible. So yes pictures would definitely be helpful .
On a side note you could run through the mud and polish them like @swatski does.

Swatski. Dumb of me. Of course they are ss. They might be 304 which will show mild rust stains. Cam.

Jeff @Cobra Jet Steering LLC I think that the way you run your ski you wouldn't see any rust in the pump if it was made of cast iron, LOL. I agree with @KXCam22 - I'm pretty sure I SAW some rusty spots once on one of my OEM impellers that was sitting around in a box, probably put away wet.

@Pullen724 I wouldn't worry about it. Keep in mind a large contingent of the membership boating exclusively in salt, with great results.

Starboard side is worse than the port side. Not horrible but its a brand new boat and I just hate seeing it like that already. Also noticed what looks like chipped edges of one of the fins on the starboard side..... should I do anything about the rust that is there or are the chipped edges hurting anything?

The drive shafts look like they have some rust on them also. I did not have any on mine, This is strange, could it be some mineral deposits or something similar? It is difficult to see clearly but it looks like some corrosion in the intake tunnel as well, How many hours are on this boat? if you pull the thermostat covers off the back of the engines you can get an idea of any sand or corrosion in the cooling passages of the head. But I do see why you are concerned.

Had 5.9 hours when I bought it from dealer and 8.5 hours today when taking these pics. Ive only had it in a fresh water lake and no shallow water to suck anything up to cause chips.

I have 400 hours with no chips but it only takes one small rock to do that. Do you see any white residue on any of the aluminum pump parts ?
Here is what I noticed , when rinsing the engine water will also back flush out the pump intake hose and dump water inside the impeller area. So if the pump was not flushed with a hose after the engine was shut off it is possible for some of the water to remain in the lower part of the pump if that water has salt etc in it , and that may cause some surface rust. I always shoot water inside the pump after I flush the engine so I know there is no salt sitting in there.

Yes those Limited are too beautiful of boats to start having rust problems with only 5.9 hours when purchased. One thing I can think of is, with demos in hot climate areas, dealers sometimes leave the demos in the water if they are located right by it for ease of access. In that case, I could possibly see this happening especially if boat was manufactured and delivered to the dealer, lets say September-October of 2015 when the new 2016 came out. That means it could possibly be sitting in water for over a years time. Don't quote me on it, just a thought?

Here in as few as 4 or 5 days you start getting barnacles around the pump area and any other sheltered areas under the water. I had to take my stuff out every few days and clean everything when I camped on a local island for 2 weeks every June.

Wow that's pretty short of time then!

Yes it really surprised me but this water is very warm in the summer I would guess that played a big part in how fast those things started growing and it always started in a area where the flow of the tide was shielded.
Fortunately the Fort Desoto boat ramp had a wash down station so it was not a huge problem to get the skies and boat out and clean them . I would usually need a pressure washer when I was done with the 2 weeks though , you always miss places. That reminded me I hit the speedo sensor spinner wheel with the pressure washer by accident and it exploded into pieces.

Hahaha. Using a pressure washer on a boat scares me. Just never know if pressure is too much.

This is a bit weird, there is some damage but NOT on the leading edges but rather the OD (outside diameter). If there was gravel ingested in the pump, you would see some dings on the leading edges -- IDK what happened there...
Have you had any experience with a boat like this one before -- and would you be able to tell if you have any abnormal cavitation? My guess is that you are fine, but maybe there is another member nearby who could run with you and tell? That would at least give you a piece of mind. Or something to fix.

funny because that could be from contact with the liner if it was swelling , also the white corrosion spots baffle me, sure looks like it sat in salt water for a time, does the pump rattle and make a lot of metallic sounds when it is running on the trailer ?
