Well today the steering cable snaped on a 2009 212x in the middle of the lake luckily, I had a friend tow me in. Part ordered and should be in next week. I was holding off on this replacement until winter well that didn't happen. No big problem still enjoyed the lake today on his 2020 252.

I’ve been dragging my feet to preemptively replace mine. This was my reminder.

So your steering was stiff at the beginning of the season?

I had to replace my steering cables last year on my 2021 252S. The steering was very stiff. I boat in salt water but the boat lives on a rack when not in use. Seems I will need to budget for replacement every two years.

I think it's really hit or miss. I kept my 2004 AR230 on a lift in water that was well on the salt side of brackish on the lower Chesapeake for years. The steering cable got stiff to the point of unusable after 15 years, and then only after having sat for a couple of years. It's a pain to replace, but doable in an afternoon (with scraped knuckles).

I’m third owner, but I’m pretty sure it’s only been in fresh water. A gate cable broke in middle of the lake last season. There was a little friction in the cable, but I didn’t think it was that bad. I overreacted and replaced both gate and throttle cables because they went to the same place. I held off on steering cables because of the perceived effort. The boat is 14 years old. No significant friction in the steering. Would anybody else preemptively replace the steering cables in my case?
