Tested my generator that we use in case of a power outage should we ever have another one like we had about 4 years ago.... tried to start it and that ethanol gas killed my "new" generator. Good news is a new carb is $10

Just a reminder to test out your generator before you need it

I always drain my generator after I use it because we use it so infreqently....

When i start mine i let it run for a bit anf then turn off the fuel line switch under the tank and let the engine run till it dies. No fuel in carb.. carb stays happy.

Thanks for the reminder! I ran everything else but i think i forgot that generator!
I may even be having an electrician friend install my transfer switch finally so if i am out of town my wife can run it without freaking me out, lol! Won't be any good ifit doesn't run!

Not sure about running the engine out of gas (lean?). If this works, my winterizing for the boat should include turning off the fuel and running the lines dry.... that would be 6 happy carbs. I guess the boat is 2 cycle and gets the oil through the gas so not the same as my generator.

There should be a drain bolt on the bottom of the carb to drain the fuel out of the bowl. It's also wise to run ethanol free fuel in any small engine to prevent any ethanol related fuel issues.

I keep looking at these transfer switches....but we lose power so infreqently now that it becomes less and less important over time. The major advantage is for hurricane and/or ice storm outages.....and (knock on wood) we don't get many of those in Raleigh (once in the last 8 years)

My house is down almost a mile and one line all the way down for all the houses. Every one has big oak trees as well. We have a tendancy to lose power at least once a year and it is usually half a day. Been 2 days once. I only lived there 3 winters now and the first winter we were out a day and a half the weekend after i moved in.

@Spooling, you are right that there is a drain bolt. I'll use that or turn the fuel off and run it dry.
