Wonder what this is in the stern port locker above the battery? Fuel pump?

That is a federally mandated fuel vapor capture canister. I believe it is filled with carbon to minimize the release of gas vapors to the atmosphere.

What Andy said.

Where is this canister located on the X boats? I need to move my batteries to accommodate a fatsac, similar to the X boat configurations, but I think that carbon canister will likely also need to move.

The canister is federally required to be installed by the manufacturer. I am not aware of any state or USCG rule/law requiring you to have it or not remove it. Just don't smoke near the fuel fill. Heck don't smoke period. In all seriousness move it anywhere that is convenient yet protects it from too much heat and if not feasible read my second sentence again ;)

I don't recall seeing it on my boat....and I was up in that area looking for speaker wires heading to the tower.....

@Mainah, understood, including the wink-wink, and no worries about smoking in or around our boat.

@Julian, any chance you can poke around and see where Yamaha put the canister on your X? I could probably figure out a spot, but makes sense to follow Yamaha's lead.

Oh, it is there @Julian, connected to the air vent (chromed cap outlet right next to the fuel cap in the gunnel).

I'd be happy to do that as soon as I have my hands on my boat again....which hopefully will be in the next couple of weeks (it is at the dealer while they hunt for the last stereo issue I've had)

@Julian, right on, thanks. New boat problems are discouraging, but best to get all the gremlins out as soon as possible, then YEARS of fun times and memories ahead!!! My buddy bought a brand new Tige Z24, I am getting ready to surf, comment to him about the cool spring-loaded swim platform ... turns out one of the platform brackets had broken. That and a couple other "start-up" issues behind him, rock solid boat.

@swatski, thanks for your response. I see you have an AR, which may be different than the X boats since the Xs have a ballast bag in the same vicinity as my boat's carbon canister (and apparently your's as well). Are you confirming the X boats have the canister in that location, or your AR?

Suspecting this is not a huge issue since ballast bags tend to conform to everything around them, but if Yamaha moved the carbon canister in their ballasted boats then I would probably do it as well since it is likely a simple mod.

To be clear on my stereo issue, I never let the dealer have the boat to fix the issue as boating was more important than this. Just told them they could have it for as long as they wanted at the end of the season!

Since the filter is for air...you can relocate it pretty much anywhere the hoses allow.....just be sure not to put a kink in a line or you will have a back pressure problem when filling with gas.

@COtoFLsurf Love your screen name! And the points and surfing expertise you bring here - we need you!
Here are the parts for the 2016 242 X E series air filter assembly, it has got to be located in the Port rear bulkhead. Looks the same as 240AR and CARB models, as well. Those hoses are not very flexible, as @Julian pointed out. It is a PITA assembly.

@swatski, thanks, these forums are all about give and take ... ;-) Will revisit the canister thing after the holidays, guessing a fatsac would conform around it, but would suck to crack it and end up with gas fumes while fueling.

I looked into relocating the canister. It is true it is emissions, but it is also a part that if not in place may cause engine issues. If I recall, we had some issues reported that were fuel delivery related with that canister. I don't remember the issues, but I remember it being discussed. It also has to be at a certain level above the tank and below the vent or it can prevent filling the tank too.

Would it be possible to build a plywood blocker and carpet it to match the storage area? That way the fat sac wouldn't be able to damage the canister and you wouldn't run any potential risk of issues / costs caused by moving it.
