Hello, looking at purchasing a very low hrs Sx230 that has been in storage for a couple of years. The engines are overheating due to a 'white tooth paste' like substance that plugs up the waterlines. The current owner says he has flushed out the lines, but after 5 to 15 min they plug back up... any idea what would be causing this? How big of an issue is the fix? Trying to figure out of this is an easy / reasonable issue - or a basket case issue?
Would greatly appreciate the help / advice.

glad to have you on board,
this is a very strange occurrence,

I'd probably walk away from this boat unless the price was unbelievably low,

How mechanically inclined are you? luckily these engines are fairly simple.

If you haven't already I would look in the FAQ tab at the top of the screen for a video about "how the cooling water flows in an MR-1 engine", it's a great video from one of our members.

even if the crud is in the cooling hose before the engine it's still being transported through the engine causing it to overheat, that worries me,
do you see any of the crud coming out of the pee holes or exhaust at the back of the boat?

Keep us posted,

The more I look into this, the more I am thinking this is a not the boat for me. There are a few other red flags around the sale... so, I am going to move on. So, if you see any great deals on an SX230HO - let me know. We lost our Utopia 205 in a fire, and I'd like to have a slightly larger boat. The 230 seems to be ideal for us.

I agree with @Scottintexas .... there are plenty of other boats out there that run fine. Unless you are prepared to tear this boat apart and are getting a SHOCKINGLY low price (like under 10k) I'd walk away. The only explanation I can come up with is he sucked up this goo or something that turned into this goo and now the intake hoses are coated in it.

If you are thinking of tackling this as a project boat....then what I've be asking is:
  1. Does it do this when in the water or on a hose hook up? (might his hose be full of crap?)
  2. If on the water, then pull the strainers and see if there is any crap in them (they are on the port side of the pump right near the impeller) - 4 bolts.
  3. Check the fittings in the engine compartment...perhaps the hose fittings themselves are deteriorating? Maybe replaced some fittings with PVC at some point which is dissolving?
Good luck....let us know what you decide!

Was your fire on the water? Because of the carbs?

I don't know where the boat is located, but if it was used in salt water and never flushed, it might be the corrosion from inside the engines. Just a guess

Was the owner recently divorced? Maybe his ex forced toothpaste up his pee hole. Sorry...that was wrong.
