Can’t reinstall pump

Pulled my pumps to replace the intermediate bearing assemblies and I can’t reinstall the starboard one. It seems as though something is misaligned, it also appears something has been rubbing on the shaft causing the scouring on it. From what I can tell there is the plastic thru hull fitting with a hose between it and the bulkhead in the engine compartment.

I wouldn’t worry about the drive shaft having scuffs like that, now if it had gouges I would be worried.. I couldn’t get mine back in a couple times and had to turn the shaft to align the teeth into the bearing. Did you get it figured out?

It will not go in far enough to engage with the intermediate shaft, the port side slides in with no issue. I have a bore scope that I’m going to take a look with and see if something has collapsed into its path.
 
Is bearing on intermediate shaft in correct position? Is the sound metal to metal when insertion stops?. Also, there are a couple of o-rings that may have gotten displaced.
 
Looks like you might have had something wrapped around the shaft at some point. I wonder if it is now in the shaft "socket". Bore scope will work....phone with video and light on might work too.

When I put the bore scope in there was a wad of nylon rope strands in the tube that I was able to get out, that’s probably what shined up the shaft. Other then that it looks like a straight shot to the intermediate shaft. Neither pump will go into the starboard side but they both slide into the port side with no issue.

Photos of the shaft coupling? Since you found rope in there I still suspect that is now stuffed into the coupling and needs removing.
 
@Julian the shaft is not going in far enough to engage into the intermediate shaft.
 
Very strange.....so it has to be impacting with something.....???
When I bought this boat from veedubtek I believe this pump was under one of the seats. I was able to install it but I had a hard time as it was doing the same thing. It seems as though something is misaligned, I’m going to pull the pump apart tomorrow and try and slide the shaft in by itself to see if it will go in.
 
I'm sure you've wiggled the F out of it, but I assisted one member with a pump pull, and his pump didn't want to go back in and I had to twist and giggle the daylights out if it....but it went back in.

I have gotten it in before, I thought about it last night and I think I had to spin it 90 degrees and lift it while inserting the shaft then spin it back when it was in far enough in to clear the hull where the bucket cable comes through.

Here is a picture of the coupler and as you can see the gap at the bottom is greater then the top. So either the front of the engine needs to come down or the intermediate shaft needs to be tipped up. There are no shims under the front motor mounts so that can’t be changed.

The reason I changed the bearing assemblies was because there was quite a bit of play up/down or side to side. I’m wondering now if the angle of the plate and intermediate shaft is incorrect causing the misalignment on both ends. The misalignment may have been compensated by the play allowing the pump shaft to align with the intermediate shaft.

My thinking last night about how I installed the pump last time was incorrect,
 
When I changed my port side intermediate bearing I wasn't very good about what gap I should have between the couplers, I know in the service manual it has it down as so many millimeters, but I didn't have that manual at the time and I had a ton of play in my bearing shaft as well. So much play I can't believe it hadn't broke off. I made sure I pressed it back into the proper depth on the new bearing when measuring the old shaft with a micrometer. And then just slid the engine back to where my engine mount bolts lined up, hopefully this won't cause an issue down the road, I assume it won't.. I can't imagine your problem is anywhere near the couplers, since mine had a ton of play and I replaced it and didn't have an issue getting anything put back together.

You can always get under the cleanout tray and remove the rubber hose and clamps where the driveshaft slides into the intermediate bearing assembly and maybe peak down in there to maybe see easier as you slide the pump through it (if you haven't done so already). I'm not sure how hard it is to get the rubber hose off though, never done it.. Keep posting as many photos as you can as you continue with this issue though!

But since you said this....how can the engine angle have anything to do with it?
I was able to get the shaft to go in further with some force and believe it is up to the intermediate shaft.
 
I finally got back to working on this last week. When I replaced the intermediate bearing assemblies the shafts had grooves in them from the seals and since I had to take everything back apart to try and figure out why the pump would not go in I ordered new shafts.

Thursday I removed the intermediate assembly, pressed the old shaft out and the new one in, installed new o-rings and reinstalled the assembly. After doing this the pump slid in with no issue and the engine coupler lined up properly also.

Still not sure why I could not get the splines to mesh but they do now.
