If it actually does that in real world average user use, that is a winner for a jet boat.

New to the forum..just ordered a 230HP 18’ Sport. Watched and read everything on the net about it so far and I think it will be a lot of fun.

I put a deposit down on a 18' Sport 230, was told it'd be here in March.

Also, in doing research for the engine selection;

The 230 Rotax 1630 ACE is a supercharged version of the 170 Rotax® 1630 ACE, you can't tune the 170hp up to 230hp but theoretically you can tune the 100hp and 170hp close to 200hp. The ECU and controls on the Switch are slightly different from the Sea-Doo skis and might not work correctly with a preexisting ski tune but it shouldn't take RIVA/Maptuner too long to have a suitable tune after the Switch hits the water.

There's never been a 100hp version of the current 1630 ACE and there may be mechanical changes which could prevent major gains like the current 130hp version gets from a tune. So there's no 100% guarantee that you'll be able to tune the 100hp up to ~200hp like you can the 130hp and 170hp skis.

The 230 Rotax 1630 ACE also has a smaller supercharger than the 300 Rotax 1630 ACE. You can only theoretically tune the 230hp up to about 250-260hp without doing major part swaps.
I just ordered the 18’ Cruise model with the 100HP hoping to god I will be able to tune up. 1st time boat owner when my Switch arrives!

No where on their site that I can find does it mention the pump specs. Typically as you increase HP you also want to increase the pump size, otherwise its like hooking up a fire hydrant to a garden hose.

Imagine if they made the pontoons modular so you could add more over time. Buy a 17' pontoon, and decide its too small....add more modules!

I would think for Economies of Scale nearly everything is identical between all models on the Sea-Doo. The engine certainly is. They have been known to de-tune engines for cheaper models.

Stupid question. Does it cost more to leave them not detuned? Isn't having to do something to them (detune) introduce another step when you are trying to cut costs?

It’s a getting to be a common thing manufactures do to increase revenue. It’s actually cheaper to put the same motors in and then detune them than to put three different motors in. Tesla did this with their Model 3 when it came to battery range. Kind of bull but it works for them. They do it with the spark 60hp so they can say it cost $5700 but move up to the 90hp and you’ll pay a lot more. Same engine just detuned. They don’t make very many of the 60hp $5700 sparks. It’s more of a marketing gimmick to get you in the door.

Any evidence of this with the Tesla? I know the Performance/Stealth and LR have different motors. It was later determined the motor was safe enough on the LRs for the Performance Boost option, but I don't know of anything regarding range.

I had a 2up spark 60hp and tuned it for a few hundred dollars and it hauled ass compared to the 3up 90hp.

No personal experience but I have heard most Yamaha outboards are this way too. They have basically 3 motors and like 9 different tunes.

I forgot Tesla does something like this with performance and battery capacity

I don't know with the 3. But when I got my S years ago I remember you could go after the fact and pay more and they would unlock remotely more battery capacity and more acceleration.

I would think this is part of their learning curve but they used it to their advantage. From my understanding they set the software very conservative and then after data collection, realized they can open it up a bit more. I hate it and love it. Give me the max from the start. BUT if you realize you can do more down the road and offer me more... then awesome. Though it probably should be free...... I think the range updates are standard in the OTAs now. Performance upgrades I doubt they ever make free because it would eat into Performance sales.

I have an odd question about the new Switch and you all may be able to enlighten me....

What have they done to enable it to handle the weight? You're not supposed to tow with a PWC for long periods but isn't the Switch essentially full time "towing"?

In case anyone was wondering about the motors of the switch, the 100HP and 170HP are the same motor and you can flash the 100HP to be above 170+. In case anyone wants to save a few bucks.
what is Flash?
how do you do it?
