Hey all,

I’ve got a 190 with about 20 hours on it. On my last trip I noticed that my throttle will not stay where I leave it. It slowly creeps back towards neutral.
For example. I take off get on plane and leave it 3/4 to WOT. If I do not hold the throttle in the exact same position the throttle it will slowly come back towards neutral and the boat will obviously slow down.

I have seen a few threads on here of throttle adjustment and will continue to research what I can but I want to know if any other owners have experienced this same problem. I believe this problem was there the first time I took out the boat but I was so excited to be a new boat owner I didn’t pay attention to every detail haha.

We call it throttle drop here. Search it out and you'll find some great diy threads

There is a little access plate on the bottom of the throttle pinnacle you pop that out and in there are two screws if I’m not mistaken the Phillips head is the one that you would tighten, I suggest 1/4 turn at a time, That is the friction adjustment for the throttle lever itself. There are a lot of YouTube on the stuff as well but that little Phillips had 12:45 half turn will make a huge difference and how much resistance there is in the throttle handle. I think it was my port throttle on my boat that used to just fall back when you let it go. Lots of people have dealt with it.

I think @FSH 210 Sport meant to spell "binnacle", which IS a part on a boat.

And @Speedling is humble, he wrote this. Throttle Dropping? Check here! It is also in the FAQ's under General Maintenance.

search it on youtube, it will show you how to take it apart and loosen or tighten.

Please keep in mind, there are two solutions listed above. Both address throttle drop, one is a fix and one is a band aid fix. So pick your poison.

Adjusting the tension of the throttles under the plate is a band-aid fix. It will tighten them up so they do not drop, but it will also tighten them up when accelerating as well. So keep that in mind. If yours is extremely loose in both directions, this is the fix for you.

Opening up the throttles and doing the "throttle drop fix" inside is the permanent fix without adding additional tension to the throttles. That will require you to go look at the write ups here or YouTube. And it is the recommendation by all of us that have done it (which is a fair amount) This is not hard at all, but a bit daunting when you see how large the throttle assembly is and taking it apart the first time. Once you have done it, you will wonder why you worried so much, as it's stupid easy.

Good luck,

Thanks for all the links and videos guys! I was worried that my problem was slightly different than the actual throttle drop and that the fix might not be the same. I will try to work on it this weekend and will update you guys then.

On a side note my boat refuses to go over 7kRPM.. im now wondering if the throttle has anything to do with that, if it wasnt properly adjusted to begin with the WOT may not have actually been WOT...

This is the fix for that...you won't have any need for a throttle sync on an AR19. But you can adjust the throttle to WOT against the stop.

I disagree, The throttle drop fix you is an entirely diffrent issue when there is excessive play in the throttle internals will cause a 500-1000rpm drop with no movement if the throttle levers. The OP is referring to the throttle levers sliding back to towards on there own becasue Yamaha ships the boats with no friction level set, My dealer said it was a safety issue to require you keep your hands on the throttles and if you away from the helm to cause the boat to start going slower. I called BS and tightned my and has been fine ever since with a couple of minor tweaks initially.

Exactly the reason why I replied that there are two fixes being suggested by others. I explained the difference. And you are right, from what he is saying is the actual levers are moving, so the tension fix may be all he needs.

@zipper could be correct but I have a question… what altitude are you boating at? And what was the temperature?

If you’re at high altitude then your rpm’s will suffer. I as well as other members have had to have our impellers adjusted with less pitch to get the rpm’s up and get the most power out of our engines.
