I can tie a bowline, doesn't mean that the Danik hook doesn't make things much easier and more precise - especially when dealing with shifting tides. It's obnoxiously expensive for what it is, but that's the price of a clever inventor.

Nice find on the rope grab! Didn't know about those. Of course, the one you link to is made for steel cable, but there are plenty there that are for rope. Find a stainless one and you are golden.

Fully agree on the bowline. But we should all know the cleat hitch first... I mean, that one is really easy and I use it probably more frequently.

My question I guess is do I need this Danick hook either way or is there a way to not use and hook? But then how would the buoy connect etc?

Bowline on the bight. Or maybe a double sheet bend. Maybe a slipped running knot and a carabiner. Depends on your mood, zodiac sign and the moons alignment with Jupiter.

Watch some YouTube videos on knots. Pick a few to master then learn some more.

Did a quick search and didn’t notice that one was for cable.

The galvanized ones hold up fine in construction and are usually pretty cheap at pawn shops.

Don't over think this. Another simple option is an overhand knot and a carabineer to clip to the bouy.
