I had a reverse gate cable break last week and needed a new one quickly, Usual thing here in Thailand none available until next week so into Bangkok i go with the old cable to see if i can get one there, I visit a place who i know can help and they said no need to buy new cable they can repair the old one, They replaced the inner cable with a new one and fitted new ends, Here's a few photos job done and back in the water next day, Nice to know they can still repair here rather than waiting to get a new one.

@Geoff Cooper you make some of us members who use Amazon and bring our boats to local service centers feel inadequate ;-)

I assure you that wasn't my intention only if you think about it the outer cable never moves only the inner takes any wear so apart from the stern end it's as good as new as the end inside the binnacle is always good so no need to replace it, he just fitted a new inner cable for me and 2 new ends, You cut away a few inches of the outer in the process but there is plenty of spare cable there so that makes no difference, An ounce of thought to a pound of thrust i say!!

So cool to have businesses like that available that will fabricate something like that so quickly and easily! We live in such a disposable society these days! On top of that, some dealers really gouge people on the prices of the Yamaha 'OEM" cables ... like doubling the price you can get the exact same cable from Teleflex for. Now you've done that one better!

I wasn't brought up in a disposable age Julian and consequently there are always options you just have to find them but there out there, I just happened to need a job doing quickly and after some thought over a cup of tea it came to me, You never need to replace the outer cable so why pay full price when you only need the inner and really just 1 end as the binnacle end is always perfect, It just bring's back memories of the days when i served my apprenticeship when you were taught to repair, You were engineers not fitters.

@Geoff Cooper was meant as a complement to your ingenuity. Nice work.
Ok thanks for that, I'm just not sure local service agents take pride in there work like you would do yourself, I know from experience that certainly over here i much prefer to do all my servicing myself and in fact always have done with all the boats i have owned, I enjoy doing all my own work and take pride in what i do, Hey I'm old school i have time on my hands to do my own work many people because of work commitments just don't have the time, Thanks for the compliment.

Once you get off the US mainland, the ratio of replace-vs-repair shifts radically. I had an outboard driveshaft quit on me in Boqueron, Puerto Rico - the corners wore off the square-cut end, and it also chewed up the fitting it went into. Johnson wanted some insane amount of money and 6-8 weeks to ship it; the local mechanic just asked me to get him a small socket and an extension, then welded the socket to the crank and the extension to the top of the shaft. Charged me all of $10 plus those two pieces.
