looking for suggestions on what to do next. I have a 2019 212x. I had to give it some gas to get off the lift yesterday and probably sucked up some sand doing so. The engine wouldn't go out of reverse to start with. I checked the clean out valves and there is nothing stuck in the blades. I removed the covers/buckets from each engine output and some sand fell out but not a lot. After i disconnected the covers I could move the engine to neutral. After putting them back on I can't move it out of neutral. Do i need to take the impeller out completely and check for sand?

Reverse and neutral have to do with the gate movement, not the impeller.

Check around the gate mechanism. There is likely a small rock or Pebble interfering with the mechanism.

I agree with bummer,

go back and disconnect your buckets again,
1. they should freely move up and down by your hand
2. work the shifter cable, it being unattached should also move freely,

if either doesn't you know where to start looking,

I picked up a pebble during a shallow reverse and it "froze" my bucket movement also,

.

Yup!

And if you have a hose handy, rinse the bucket off with the hose while you are doing this. Just gravel etc in the gate hinges.
