Demo boat

I have a closing date for a 2018 demo boat - it has 5 hours on the engines. I'm excited and nervous. It's being sold as 'New', from a certified dealer.

Should I have any worries?

Personally I'd only be concerned about cosmetic wear and tear from demo'ing which you should be able to easily identify if there is any. I guess like any boat dealer and boat purchase a lot depends on the reputation of the dealer. The fact that the boat has run 5 hours to me would be a plus mechanically as that is the period where any quirks and defects are worked out if there are any in a brand new boat. As long as its sold "as if New" and the warranty starts when you buy it, I wouldn't have any concerns beyond concerns you normally have on buying a new boat.

I'd ask about the break in process as far as determining that they actually did it (they should have done it, about 1.5 hour break in procedure per manual). 10 hour maintenance would be business as usual once you hit the 10 hour mark.

Check the gps on a brand new boat and you'll see a higher MPH recorded than you'll ever hit (yamahas that is). The most important parts of an engine break in are done far before it ever makes it to an end user.

They take it to WOT at the factory lake. Not for long but it does violate the manual’s “break in” instructions. My connext history showed max mph of 51 when I bought it new.

They said it was used by Yamaha for photo shoots. It may be the boat in the 2018 promotional video!

Yep, I asked for that at the last second and they were happy to oblige.

Also worth noting, though mine was a demo it was technically used, as it was registered to the regional yamaha rep. All of the accessories (table, extra cushions, etc) were still factory bubble wrapped.

It'd be hard to ask for the 10 hour service, the boat is 7 hours away. I specifically asked if this is considered a new boat, which they said yes. Any implications into having it classified as 'used'?

There shouldn't be... the only thing I could think of is the inception date for the warranty....

Only one potential implication, which is financing. Some lenders base used/new status on year, others on title status. When I was loan shopping, some of them put me into a used status and a higher interest rates. The one I ultimately went with was like “It’s a 2017, and it’s 2017 now, we’ll do the new rates.”

I am looking at a 2017 demo boat (242x) with 8 hours.

Dealer is discounting to $69k but am pushing for better price as it is going on 2 years old. The boat has 8 hours total on it.

Dealer says it is covered by Yamahas 5 year extended warranty...

Only downside is that is an 11 hour drive to go get it. For the right price it would be a no brainier... We'll see what otd price they come back with. Good luck on your purchase!

I got about 12.5K off MSRP on my demo (with 5-year YES). I'd push for a good chunk more.

I got a 2017 factory demo and very happy. Did you get a mooring cover also?

Yes, the mooring cover and sport mirror were included. Do all trailers come with bearing buddies and retractable tie downs?
