When you edit a post, should this be necessary, NEVER use the "Edit Silently" option, and do NOT select "Clear Last Edit Information".
Also, send a message to the member who's post you edited as to why you edited it, and copy another moderator on the conversation.
Ideally we shouldn't edit anyone's posts, but there might be situations where this is unavoidable. If possible, get the member to edit it themselves, and/or confer with another moderator first. But if there is egregious language etc then act as needed.
Our goal here should be to interfere as little as possible. If a thread gets really heated, lock it, and post here that you locked it. I've rarely had to do that, and not sure how the functionality here works with locked threads, but we should be able to post to a locked thread stating that things were too heated and the thread has been locked.
