In a response to another thread post in this same "general discussion" category, I mentioned I should start a reference thread for my Fire-Pit mod, rather than hijacking that thread with off topic pics. https://jetboaters.net/threads/well…-the-rumours-are-true….34873/page-3#post-562057
After buying a used pontoon boat for my dogs from my Chaparral Jet Boat dealer in 2016, I got hooked on searching for add-ons, toys, convenience things, accessories, etcetera.
I stumbled upon a 2015 article describing the top 5 toys one needs for their pontoon boat. I located and called the company. They offered 2 floor models 16", & 24" on center floor joist spacing. 24" is typically found on older pontoons, and a few table models. Now I had no idea that he was on his way out the door, going out of business that is, but he had inventory for the 24" so I bought one.
The install went without a hitch, I had a slight overcut when the skill saw kicked back a bit, but I plan to remove the worn carpet one day and install marine vinyl as used on pontoon boats anyway.
After all was installed and tested, I took to the lake, I didn't realize that the toon strakes would cause so much water deflection right where the fire-pis was now located, this was rectified by adding diamond plate aluminum sheets to the under side, and sealed. The work was done November 2016..

Here are some of the original companies videos still posted online..

As shipped, crappy packaging too.

The pontoon has a rear sundeck which is an all aluminum sheet that lifts up to gain access to the stern areas. This view will help to understand the propane tank placement that I chose.

Lets measure a bit, and cut a nice hole in my floor, after all I dubbed this boat for the dogs, my Whiterash Pontoon boat.

White knuckled all the way, but it's done. Probably the best thing on this boat is the age old marine plywood that's like new, and probably holding up better than today's quality with the change of PT process and chemicals.

Test fit, and partial mounting went well, The Fire Pit is well made, all stainless pan, and aluminum burner with brass fuel handling parts.

Slight over-cut beyond the trim ring, but I'm not concerned.

Now lets cut up the fiberglass helm to mount the gas valve and battery igniter module. I moved the helm bench out of the way so I wasn't so cramped.

Clearly there was enough hose, and igniter wire to go the distance. After drilling the hole in the stern area, running the hose there was a challenge on this boat.

I still have to buy a plastic tank holder all these years later, it's held there with a handcuff style zip tie.

Testing out before I add the fire glass.

They send black fire glass, I had bought fire beads as an alternative, which did ok.

I'm unsure if I should be excited or scared for you. Really cool mod to the old girl!

I feel like I saw something similar to this on one of those "restored it" Youtube channels, except the guy had it mounted at like "coffee table height" on some pedastals. No idea if that's better or not.

How is it under foot during the day? Does that lid stay put, and does it get hot under your feet?

Ah what could go wrong! The last place I would want a fire is in the middle of the walkway of my boat. If your toes get cold while your out I’d use a towel or some shoes instead of a fire.

The Admiral loves the type of fire pits with the glass beads. If she saw this she would wonder if we could just get a pontoon. Pretty cool  Are there any regs on having something like this on a boat?

That’s a nice install and a cool feature but putting a fire in your wood and carpeted boat floor just seems wrong!

For me.....fire ANYWHERE on a boat is like fire on and aircraft.....SCARY SHIT! BUT....the mod looks good.....quality work.....good luck!

I worry when burgers flare up when cooking over the edge of the swim platform

Yes the cover can get warm if you put it back on right after turning the fire off, this is the ramaining radiant heat coming from the fire glass. It's fastened to the floor, is able to be walked on/over, and the lid has a key lock, so it locks in place.

None that I know of.

Coal Walker! Where do you redneck from, you would fit in down here in georgia.
Not far from you at all.

To the naysayers, and general ignorance present, the lack of understanding and/or experiencing something always tends to promote a form of cancel culture, dismissal, rejection, and adverse reactions. At the end of the day it's all about common sense, and responsibility, especially when there are others on board. I have no kids, I don't drink when boating, usually boat alone or with 1 to 3 others. This accessory is well designed, and serves a great purpose. This mod was done November 2016.
"I can't remember the last time my fire-pit knocked on my front door leaving a note saying, I've decided to turn myself on and destroy your boat in the middle of the night, you made a mistake installing me" (CM)

I saw this on my thread and was half hoping you'd start a thread so i could see the build process LOL! that is such a cool idea! Of course its dangerous, its a fire! its dangerous in the same way its dangerous to carry a loaded handgun in the glove compartment of your car. Can accidents happen? of course they can! will being responsible mitigate the risk of people getting injured? of course.

Definitely not something i would do, only because i dont have balls big enough to cut that much out of my boat ;) That would definitely extend the boating season here in Southern Canada that's for sure!

I was thinking more about it getting hot under foot from the sun in the middle of the day, hadn't even considered after use.

Either way it's a cool (hot?) mod!

The tinkerer in me thinks this is awesome (not something I'd do perhaps, but still cool). The Floridian in me thinks additional heat on my boat would be miserable lol.

Interesting mod for sure! I get why the naysayers are saying what they are saying....I might add a fume detector on the deck or near the gas tank since they aren't expensive. My primary concerns would be fume ignition, and then burns from the heated element (or lid).....but since @ChrisM says he's only boating with sober adults - should be ok....

Thanks for sharing!

Only because the people who write the regs never imagined someone putting a fire pit on a boat.
