I first saw a Yamaha at the 2009 Milwaukee boat show. The economy was crap, I had just had to lay off my buddy (permanently) and the thought of buying something like a new boat was crazy. We were just at the boat show "for something to do."
The kids had fun checking out every boat at the place but I have to admit that after a couple hours of trying to keep them in check I was getting tired of being there.
We had made the final turn down the final aisle and were heading for the door when the kids went up yet another set of wooden stairs to check out yet another open-bow runabout. They said "Dad, can we go on this one?" and stood at the edge waiting expectantly. I fully intended to say "No, we've seen enough. Let's go," but the salesman beat me to it with a "Sure! Go on in!" The kids looked at me with those grins you just can't resist. "O.K. Fine. But BE CAREFUL!" (Fate rears its head #1.)
Chris and I followed them aboard just to make sure they didn't wreck the thing. I immediately noted the dual tachometers and throttles. My gaze went 'round and saw the head compartment. Then I saw that it was a Yamaha. Huh. Didn't know they made boats like this. Either way, in my brain I knew this was a $60K+ boat so don't even think about it.
I chatted with the salesman a bit and was surprised to learn that it was a twin-engine jet boat. Pretty cool!
We had gathered the kids and were about 10 yards away (my brain having already put the thing in the same class as the 55 foot cruiser we had been on earlier) when Chris leaned in to me and said "I really liked that one." (Fate rears its head #2.)
I spun on my heal and went back and grabbed a brochure and price sheet. By the end of the day I was on the internet and had found... well... let's just say I found "you guys."
Of course that summer we had a two-week layoff for us salaried folks at the plant. There was clearly no boat purchase in the near future.
Time marched on and the new boats came out. We attended the 2010 show and checked out the new boats - we liked them even more than the old ones.
Alas, by the time July rolled around we had figured out the sad reality: We are a single-income 4-kid family. The price of the boats was going up faster than we were able to save for one. We could ALMOST pull off a purchase but the interest rates were just too high for us to be comfortable.
In the middle of all this, I was fooling with a little stock I had in my e-trade account. That's always been my "gambling" money so it was never much. I was watching one of my perennial favorites (Principal Financial Group) taking a slow nose-dive. I ditched it and started buying the one stock I really should have avoided: Ford. And I was determined to be dangerous. Every time Ford dropped significantly I bought another 200 to 300 share. By the time it hit rock-bottom I had averaged out to 1000 share at $2 / share. (Fate rears its head #3)
After several weeks of not thinking about it, I happened to check in with "you guys" to see if anything was new. (Fate rears its head #4) Someone had posted that Yamaha had reduced their financing to 2.99% on 15 year loans.
Within the hour I had located a "leftover" 2009 sitting in Kenosha. Of all the colors, it just HAD to be black. (The two Mustangs I had owned were black - why? Do they come in other colors?)
I walked in the door and must have had a funny look on my face because Chris said "What's wrong?"
Before I had even put down my laptop bag or closed the door I said "Yamaha just dropped their financing to 2.99% for 15 years. Ford is at $7.50 / share. There is a leftover 2009 Yamaha at a dealership in Kenosha. He's open until 6:00 tonight."
Without batting an eyelash she marched into the kitchen and started putting away the pots and pans she had taken out to prepare dinner with.
"What are you doing?"
We're eating dinner in Kenosha tonight.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Heading into our 4th full summer with it (5th if you count a month in 2010) I can say that I wouldn't trade my boat for anything else right now. It's the perfect fit for us.
In a few years when the kids are gone a "sport boat" might not suit us as well, but we'll see. Everyone else's kids will be gone too and our friends will have more time to come with us!
