Hi all...

Somebody had mentioned (@Cobra Jet Steering LLC , I believe) a reverse move to help clean out debris that has been sucked up...what is this move?

Seems like it is something i should master!

For cleaning off the intake grates on the bottom when they are getting caked with grass/seaweed or for dislodging stuff from the impeller:

Go in reverse as fast as you are able.
Pull the deadman cable (the red cord by the throttles that you are supposed to have clipped to you--it kills the engines immediately).
Throw the throttles full forward (quickly, so as to open up the jets in the back).

The water will then flow in from the aft side of the jets and out the intake grates, clearing what ills your boat.

The one issue I just thought about is if you have the new electronic system that works only when the engine is running you are probably out of luck with the reverse move because the reverse hood must be open with the engine shut off for this to work.

I keep meaning to test this on the ethrottles, but all you need to do is either:

  1. put it in forward before you kill the engines
  2. Or the same move will likely work as long as the key is on (need to test this)

Any risk of flooding the engine with this maneuver? Or no, because it is still relatively low speed?

It worked for me without killing the engines
Having come up with this move 15+ years ago I can say that it really can not work with the engines running, actually turning the engines off is vital in 2 ways, one it stops the suction that is holding the weeds to the intake grate like turning off a vacuum cleaner so to speak and secondly you need the water to be traveling backward through the pump and out the intake grate to push out any stuck weeds, this is not possible with the engine running as the impeller is constantly turning , there is no real neutral or real reverse as far as the pump is concerned.

Well, I had major cavitation and very little thrust. I put it in full reverse, then slammed the throttle to full forward. No more cavitation, and ran perfectly.

Good for you, but it is not mechanically probable to ever work that way so I do not suggest anyone do it that way and expect results.

I get what you're saying, and I'm glad you said not probable vs your previous post which said not possible. Because for me it worked 100% of the time (1 for 1). I'll remember to pull the lanyard next time though.

Why you are on a roll, try 2 for 2 haaa oh there is a way to clear weeds that is a lot more fun just hit a wake really hard and fly through the air, when you leave the water the pump looses suction and when you land any weeds that did not fall off get blasted out the pump, and Yes I do it all the time "on a ski ", However boats are a bit more difficult to put in the air but it would certainly be more fun

@TheGreekTitan , it is likely that worked for you more because of slamming it forward (and the engine crushing/pushing through whatever was blocking) than for anything else in your routine. But that will not work with weeds like the reverse move is meant to clear. It will work with the little piece of wood that you might suck up or a smaller thing like that.

Good to have both tools in your toolbelt.

I actually caught a little air following a wake surf boat today. MAN they put out some rollers! There were no weeds to clear; but that didn't matter. Wheeeee!

It was definitely a piece of wood, or some leaves. It happened while visiting the waterfalls. There was a lot of branches and other stuff floating on the water. Plus we have to pass through a section that is less than 2 feet deep there and back. Guess my boat isn't magical after all. :D

Here's where it happened.
