Selling boats: why is this?

It is poor form to comment on someone's asking price. Period. In other forums I frequent, such things will earn you a vacation.
Sure, you cannot expect to recover your mod $ 1 for 1, and there is some depreciation. You might be competing with 0% financing etc....but there are still many advantages to someone buying used.

Focus on the "package of value" your are providing i.e. mods, gear, etc. As long as you are not too far out of whack with the book value, somebody will be attracted by the fact that they can put down a little money and finance the whole deal whereas they would have to come up with thousands more of their own cash to outfit a new boat with all the toys. I know, it's not sound financial advice for the buyer, but it's a good strategy for the seller. As someone said, the market will drive the sell....

This. A lengthy time-out, if not an outright ban. I wish more forums would subscribe to this model... NO AD STOMPING! Just IMHO.

@Cowboy Casey Good luck with the sale. It sounds like you are doing the right thing. Family dictates what we do in life.

As for upgrades, unfortunately the seller does not recoup what they put in to it. What they do get is the extra leverage over competition. If anything, it makes it more attractive and potentially a quicker sale when compared to other competitively priced boats or potentially even lower priced competition. But the market will dictate the price more often than not.

I also agree that negative comments on a boat for sale is just poor taste.

List it on here. When I was looking I was hoping to find one on here, hoping that a lot of the knowledge would come with it. I would have bought from someone on here before outside for a similar product.

Anyhow, good luck and stick around...I like your avatar :)

If you were to go buy a new boat today, it would cost you 62 or 63 out the door, so why wouldn't 57 or 56 be a great deal?

That is not even counting the 15000 I have into stereo, lights and equipment...

This is just in regards to your specific question. If someone can buy a brand new boat for 62k out the door, then 57k for a used boat would be a horrible deal because it's not exactly an "out the door" number. It's not apples to apples because that new buyer then has to pay sales tax (roughly $4,000 depending on state sales tax) plus registrations, tags, etc fees. So basically you're just $1,000 less than a brand new never used boat for a used (doesn't matter the hours) one year old boat which automatically has a lower value. Throw in the fact that most people finance toys this expensive with higher interest rates on used and it equals a higher payment for something used. Also, first year depreciation is the highest depreciation value over the life of the boat. It sucks, but most that buy new intend on keeping it for a long time and we like knowing we were the first and only owner. The hardest toy to sell is just a one year old model since it often doesn't make financial sense to purchase over new.

Now if your boat has 15k in aftermarket parts then your asking price probably isn't out of line. However, it's going to be more difficult to find the right buyer since you'll need to find someone that not only specifically wants your boat but also wants an extremely expensive sound system at the same time. Probably a very small market. And the longer people see it sit for sale the more low ball offers you'll get because people will assume you're getting antsy to sell.

Either way it only benefits you to list it in as many places as possible. I think it's in very bad etiquette for someone to bash a sellers asking price and even more to do so publicly. List it up, say thanks but no thanks to the low ball offers, and best of luck in the sale!

I was assuming the 15K in stereo equipment was a typo. Is that the real number? If so... holy crap... need to see pics!!

@RobA I remember tracking this stereo build, can't remember if it was this forum or the other but I remember it being legit. Above and beyond what most any of us have done.

Ok Time for some clever marketing! Call a few of the higher end Pool Contractors and see if you can work a deal on a new pool using the boat as payment!!

:winkingthumbsup" Just trying to think outside the box:winkingthumbsup"

Sorry to hear you are selling @Cowboy Casey but understand you have to do what's best for you and your family.

As for banning people from posting negative (or positive) comments, I'm not down with it. As I recall, one of the reasons this site was created was to be free from such censorship. Who is to say what is negative v. positive? Do we need to define what negative means in the context of a for sale ad or is it like pornography and the judge (who ever that is) will just know it when they see it? If you post it on a forum like this the poster should not just suspect comments they should expect them.

Someone else suggested a good way to handle this, that is just not allow any comments at all on sales ads and have responses go via pm directly to the seller, Like Craig's list. Just my two cents as I've been on both sides of this fence several times now, in the end as a seller I want someone I trust to tell me if my price is unrealistic. As a buyer I view such statements as posturing for a better price, nothing more. When such comments come from non buyers I see them as opportunities to develop responses.Such comments may be made here first but sellers are almost sure to hear them elsewhere before a sale is made. After all we are not talking about $50 we are talkin about $50k.

Here's a thought Casey. Since Dallas is in the middle of its summer boat show, if you want it sold and not mess with the whole ordeal, bring it down to Phil Dill and let them sell it. You know they are going to have a lot of traffic in their showroom in the coming weeks and people are going to be hungry for a new toy. You may loss a little, but it should sell rather quickly.

Or you could use it to wheel and deal with a pool builder. That's a great idea if you can find the right builder that you like to work with and wants your boat.

@Cowboy Casey So the deal includes 500 lbs a solid ballast.. ie batteries...geez.. Nice...

One Idea---We could look into if there is a way for members to lock their own posts in the classifieds section...that way you could chose to post with comments or without comments. If you chose to leave it open for comments, then you risk someone commenting on the price....

Another idea would be to put a sticky in the classifieds that members to ask Mods to lock their thread so no comments are made.

A specialized boat with a HUGE stereo like this will take a niche buyer. It might be easier to pull the stereo and sell the parts on EBAY to regain the $ than to recoup that much value in the boat....but as many have said....if you find the buyer who is looking for a ROCKIN' boat...then it is worth what that buyer is willing to pay!

Sorry to see you have to sell the boat when it is so close to new Cowboy. I spent 10 years buying and selling American muscle cars. I would never say anything negative about someone's asking price. I would keep it to myself and move on. But in any market, sellers don't determine prices, buyers do. But I always felt for the guy that would try too hard to recoup what they spent on mods that were extreme. You can come close if you have the patience and find just the right buyer that wants what you wanted. But the more you spent on the mods, the more the market is narrowed. I think your price is fair for what you have in it, but you are competing with brand new boats and give away financing. Like the rest of us with similar boats, we have a vested interest and hope you get absolute top dollar! I have a friend that is in the market and will certainly let him know about it and anyone else I see in the market for a beautiful boat like yours. For those of you that like the 60-72 american muscle car I put a page up a few years ago with some of the cars I sold the last 12 months I was in the market. (Got out right before the crash, thank goodness!) www.jr56.com

I will say that I went to meet the guy selling the boat I own with the plan to buy new from a local dealer. He coaxed me to meet him first and I did. After a lot of thought after the test drive I bought his instead of new.

Had I bought new I can say that I would have not been happy. The stereo that came with my used boat saved me soooo much time and money and I feel that I got a solid deal.
Had i bought new I would have went this season without what I really wanted and would have had to talk l the boss into spending extra money on stuff she didn't realize we "need". I am that niche. Someone will be lucky to get that set up. For the most part we all know the most important part, the power plant, will be solid 1,2,3 years old, no difference.
So the extras can be very inticing.
