What is the take on rebuilding the supercharger every 200 hrs. or 2 years which ever comes first. I would like to get some idea of the cost ahead of time and was told by the dealer that it was not necessary for boats only for PWC because they are at wide open throttle most of the time unlike boats.
 
I'd definitely do it. If you can pull the charger yourself and mail it off to Jerry, it'll cost about $400 if memory serves correctly (It's not even hard to do it yourself, but he only charges $75. OEM rebuild kit was like $325).

The ski thing really stems from the pre-2011 ceramic washers that liked to blow, but there are still parts in there that like to wear out.

All of the Supercharged Rotax engines (except the 1630 ACE) Need the superchargers rebuilt at 200 hours. They have clutch washers, bearings, and seals that need to be replaced. If you don't, you risk catastrophic failure, and possible engine damage.

The supercharger maintenance is wear and tear, and not covered under warranty. Same as the Yamaha.

You know Julian, with all the time you seem to spend in the Scarab section, you should have bought one. Stop giving wrong advice, and misleading these guys. I know you don't do it on purpose, but if you don't 100% understand please keep it off of this section. The boats are picky as it is, and any wrong info will most certainly lead to more issues.
 
As stated, I would most certainly do it at 200 as required. I would compare the used wear items with the new items and make a determination of how long the interval could be extended or shortened.

I like tearing things apart myself. Probably gets me in trouble.
I personally would do it just because i would like to see how it's all put together. If it was my boat anyways.
Then i would probably figure out this ceramic washer thing and be like "ohhhhhh.. thats why!"
Then i would figure out how to turbocharge it. Good thing i don't have money. I would spend it all quick! Lol

Back to the question at hand, i would have it done and/or do it because i then have the peace of mind.

I'm sorry you don't like my opinion. I'm still happy to give it and the OP can take it or leave it. Its an opinion. I'm a believer in following the manufacturers guidelines, and if they say it isn't needed, that is what I usually go with unless someone has evidence that shows why this is a bad idea (which is typically/often when the manufacturer changes their service stance too).
 
The problem isnt your opinion, it's the placement. Many of these guys come to this section (which has blown up as far as traffic) for information because of their lack of knowledge, or experience. We have to be careful on how we approach these people with information especially with these boats. Thats all Im saying. The OP may not know to take it or leave it.

I imagine I'd be correct to assume the manufacturer says to do it still? It's the dealer that's saying don't. And, if we've learned anything here, it's that most Scarab dealers don't seem to know dick about these boats.

When you have a considerably more powerful engine, they normally require a little more preventative maintenance than their less powerful counterparts. What did you read that made you glad to have bought a different brand? A service interval at the 200 hour mark? I bet if you study the maintenance schedule for your boat, you'll find a similarly invasive procedure at the 200 hour mark that Yamaha suggests you have done. Whether you choose to do it or not is up to you, but the almighty Yamaha engineers themselves think you should. This particular thread is soliciting advice from other jetboat owners on whether or not this particular 200 hr preventative maintenance item needs to be done on his scarab, not how much the yamaha guys love their boats.

plus a fairly substantial number of complaints about poor service. I never said a word about "how much" I "love" my boat, and it was not an indictment of the Scarab, just a comment about reconfirming my decision not to go with a Scarab. Being new to jet boats, and being completely ignorant, I spent alot of time reading this and other forums. My decision was based on the overall satisfaction/disatisfaction of owners of all the brands. And apparently those who give advice are admonished for their opinions on here too.
 
@captras Not sure what the meaning of your post is, but no one is reprimanding anyone about their opinion. This is an open community with a ton of experience, and knowledge. The only thing I said is if someone is reading these posts looking for an answer to a question or issue, then lets get that person what they are seeking. There are people that come here just for solutions that they have because they searched the web and found threads like this one. Im glad you gentlemen are enjoying your Yamahas. If I had the bankroll I would also be the owner of one. But I too was a "new to jet boat" person. And my only source of information at the time of purchase was the same dealership selling the Scarabs. But, now I am stuck with a boat that I paid way more than what its worth now.

Don't get me wrong, I love my boat, but I would have purchased a used Seadoo 230SP from what I know now.

I want to add that I too am glad you guys are enjoying your Yamahas. They are wonderful boats. I just don't feel that a call for help in scarab or chaparral section is the place to express your passion for them.
 
Pretty sure his smiley meant he was being tongue in cheek about it.

I still believe that if the Manufacturer (agree-I shouldn't have said dealer) says no rebuild needed, that I wouldn't pay to have it done.....but I'm not a Scarab or super charger expert....so your results may vary!

I also was wanted a Sea doo boat too, but was not going to pay that kind of money for a used boat and was disappointed when they quit making boats, that is what led me to Scarab. I wanted NEW and I wanted the Rotax engine with close loop cooling because I boat in salt water. I know what salt does to a engine no matter how good you clean them. I have no problems with my boat and I love it, that is why I would like to take care of it the best I can. I will rebuild the Super Charger at 200 hr. but I don't think I will do it at 2 years because I will probably only have less than 100 hrs. on it. I am at 54 hrs. now. Thank-You for all your comments.

Sounds like a solid plan. I would do the same thing!
 
.... Or wait til the warranty ends, and replace the old SC with the new ACE one, its maintenance free!!!

I have close to 70 hours on my boat and the supercharger is fine for two years of use.
